Wigan Rotary 2015 Community Day – 11th July
Following a very successful Community Day last year, on Saturday 11th
July 2015 Standishgate once again vibrated to the sound of the Wigan Jazz
Orchestra in the morning and in the afternoon a variety of acts entertained
everyone including a couple of choirs, a street dance group and a youth
theatre group. All along the street 38 local charities, who had been
brought together by the Rotary Club of Wigan, were in full flood telling
the shoppers about their good causes, seeking to recruit volunteers and
informing fellow sufferers. Other raised much needed funds so their good
work can continue.
They ranged from Age UK Wigan, to the Beanstalk Charity and included local
churches, youth groups, Sightsavers, book exchanges and older and young
carers groups. All reported that they had enjoyed the opportunity of
meeting the shoppers and others who had made the special effort to come.
On the stage were 10 acts which included the Wigan Community Choir, local
young rapper, Lil Pac and the Willpower Theatre Group along with Wigan
Youth Zone. Their efforts were very much appreciated by the crowds who
gathered around during the afternoon.
Wigan Rotary Club President Keith Trencher said “ We have been very
impressed by all those who had responded to our initial invitation”. He
continued by adding “ we were so pleased to welcome our new Mayor, Cllr.
Sue Loudon to the event. There has been a really good atmosphere this
second year. I feel sure Wigan Rotary will be holding the event again next
year which will be open to all local charities, local branches of national
charities and recognised good causes, at no cost to the good cause”.
