Mari Griffin has stepped into the local history records book.
She has become the first woman to be elected a full member of Sale Rotary Club since it was founded over 70 years ago.
Mari, from Dunollie Road in Sale Moor, was encouraged by her brother David Ward, a long time Rotarian and currently President of the Osgoldscross and Elmet Rotary Club in Yorkshire.
A pioneer? "I'm not conscious of it," she says. "Everyone has made me welcome and I've been totally and wholeheartedly accepted. The meetings provide me with good company, a sense of charitable purpose and I'm proud to be part of it."
The international network of Rotary Clubs was founded 100 years ago, in Chicago, for the fellowship of business and professional men. The Inner Wheel, for women members of Rotarian families, was added in 1967 but women have been able to join Rotary in their own right for the last 16 years.
"Times have changed," says the new Sale President Peter Munday, "but many people still regard Rotary as some sort of a secret society for men only. Nothing could be further from the truth.
"We exist for a combination of friendship and the support of charitable causes."
