Once again inside the Council Chamber overlooked by the past Mayors of Oldham, the annual Student of the Year awards were presented by the town's most senior citizen, Councillor Derek Hefferman. The first award in the millennium year of 2000, each occasion has been organised by Past President Ray Coverley PHF, this one marks the end of an era, next year a newn Chairman will be appointed. The Club is grateful for the consistence of Ray and the development of the project.
Parents, teachers and students were in attendance for the announcement of this year's winners - Katie Ball (under 16 years of age) and Jahangir Alam (16-18)
Saddleworth School pupil Katie said, "It feels amazing to have achieved this, ever since I was at Junior school I have organised the schools KEY 103 Christmas collection. I have also run books sales for local charities and non-uniform days for BBC Children In Need."
Oldham Sixth Form College student Jahangir has undertaken voluntary work at the Royal Oldham Hospital, helping patients, this is preparation for a future in the health cared profession. He has already confirmed a place at Salford University to study pysiotheropy. In his role as Sports Ambassador he has visited school's across Oldham, encouraging those with disabilities or special needs to take part in sport.
Oldham Hulme Grammar School kept up its success story with Daisy Hilton winning runner-up (11-16) and Nadia Margo-Smart, runner-up in 16+.
Daisy is a member of the school's anti-bullying association; she is gearing up for a trip to Ghana where she will help at a local school.
Nadia was nominated for her outstanding school achievements despite several health Issues. During the year's hospitalisation meant she could only attend school for 21 days. She still attained A grades in each area of class work.
In total there were 27 nominations from 9 schools and colleges.
