Despite increasing difficulties sourcing candidates Past President Ray Coverley P H F and his team have again tracked down a company with local connections to be worthy winners of this award.
That companies story began way back in in 1859 when Manchester entrepreneur and innovator James David Williams started running three mobile shops. He also took order by letter for goods he didn't stock. The business was so successful that in 1875 he founded J D Williams. Seven years later he revolutionized his business be becoming the first person to use the Post Office's new Parcel Post Service.
In 1921 it became a private company and twenty two years later (1963) the Williamson family sold their shares to a subsidiary of the Alliance brothers.
The global supply chain and fulfillment operations included the Logistic Centre in Shaw, and in Hadfield - Glossop. They now employ around 1,000 people and store more than 1.5 million square feet of stock, they are proud of their history, and even more excited about their future.
Club President Neil Taylor presented the Community Service Shield to Sarah Crossly, the groups Human Resources Manager, awarded for their ongoing work in the local community. So far this year involving 29 good causes, sponsorship and dozens of raffle prizes.
