THE Young Carers project supports young people in Oldham who have a significant caring responsibility with both individual support and with access to a weekly activity session to help relieve some of the stress that comes with being a Carer and as a reward for their valuable help.
Rotarians were astonished at how young children were taking on family responsibility in the early morning before going to school and again when returning in the afternoon and over the weekends.
A young carer or young caregiver is a child or young person up to the age 18, whose life is affected by looking after someone with a disability or a long-term illness.
The person they care for may be a parent, a sibling, another family member or a friend, but does not necessarily live in the same house as them. The care they give may be practical, physical, and emotional. They might help out with cleaning or cooking, getting a relative or a friend out of the house, helping with medicines, keeping them safe, showering or dressing them or just watching out to make sure they are okay.
Members of the Rotary Clubs of Chadderton & Failsworth and Oldham combined their efforts to fund a day out, as a treat for around 30 of these great kids. On Thursday August 29th they set off from Union Street in Oldham by coach to Drayton Manor Theme Park near Tamworth in Staffordshire. Here they spent a long and exciting day on rides and rollercoasters. Visited the zoo and enjoyed eating together.
It proved to be so successful that and Oldham will now look forward to supporting breaks for Young Carers on a regular basis.
