Following a presentation at a recent meeting, the Club has agreed to adopt a section of the river bank in the centre of Northwich alongside Lock Street (The former Manweb Depot). The Club received its formal Certificate of Adoption on the 11th May 2016 from the Canal & River Trust when the first working party of volunteer Rotarians arrived to be trained by the Trust staff.
Working in partnership with the Canal and River Trust and Age UK's Men in Sheds the Club has installed three large planters alongside the section of the Weaver Navigation that the Club has adopted. The planters were made by Men in Sheds and have been planted with 5000 crocus corms and several hundred viola plants. All the plants are purple in colour and mark World Polio Day (24 October 2016) and are part of Rotary International's End Polio Now campaign. Clubs across the UK and Ireland have been encouraged to Plant Purple4Polio, and through the purchase of crocus corms are providing much needed funding for the battle against Polio. The planters face the River Weaver and the newly regenerated Barons Quay and will provide a splash of colour for visitors to the area. The event has been added to Great Britain and Ireland's Rotary Crocus Planting Map - see http://www.rotarygbi.org/what-we-do/purple4polio/map/ where more about the End Polio Now campaign can be found. As a group of volunteers the Club is committed to making a difference in the local community. This particular length of river bank has been sadly neglected and is overlooked by the new developments at Barons Quay. With such a central location this section of the river bank represented a perfect opportunity for Rotary to combine with the Trust and make a real difference to the local community. The club will clear, maintain and enhance the area for a fixed period of time for the benefit of both the general public and river users.
