This evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Jim Housley and Paul Hewitt from North West Miners Heritage, who gave us a fantastic insight into the lives of the men who worked beneath our feet and the proud mining history of our area.

We heard stories from Sutton Manor Colliery, where miners would travel half a mile underground before even beginning their journey to the coal face, sometimes travelling several miles by underground train before walking the final stretch to start work.

The talk brought home the challenging conditions miners faced every day. The heat and dust underground could be extreme, with miners often unable to wear dust masks because of the temperature. We learned about the equipment that kept them safe, from gas testing to self-rescuers that gave miners precious time to escape in an emergency.

There were also plenty of human stories: packed lunches (“snap tins”) having to be protected from hungry mice, the strong bonds formed between the men, and the importance of teamwork when working in such difficult and dangerous conditions.

We reflected on the risks involved too, remembering the 50 lives lost at Sutton Manor, including a visiting priest who suffered a fatal heart attack underground.

Jim and Paul also shared how former miners continue to support the community today, including looking after local heritage, school visits, talks, community events and preserving memories through banners and displays, some of which are also represented at the National Coal Mining Museum.

It was a powerful reminder of the skill, bravery and camaraderie of the mining community, and how important it is that these stories continue to be told for future generations.

A huge thank you to Jim, Paul and North West Miners Heritage for a brilliant and memorable evening.
