Notes from the Business Meeting 23rd September 2025.

20 attendees

1. Present: David Smith, John Morse, Ian Boden, Ken Smith, Stuart Ainscough, Geoff Shaw, John Graves, Alan Robinson, Alan Pomfret, Harry Steven, Paul Mulvenna, Rebecca Gallagher, Barry Curran, Derek Hirst, John Murray. Les Greenall, Richard York, Ray Bointon, Ray Edwardson and Les Clancy.

2. Apologies: Ian Parr, John Shaw, Mike Eaves, Phil Round, Len Rainford, Vivienne Clancy and Claire Chapman.

3. Welfare Matters: The president reported that Ian Parr was out of hospital. Ian has stepped down as chairman of the Community Services Committee, but he wishes to continue on the committee. Ian hopes to be at the Coffee Morning next week, and he also hopes to be at Charter Night.  Ian Boden had visited Austin, who is short of breath. David stated that Janet was still in hospital. Rebecca will be going to America, this Friday for family reasons.

4. Visits: Stuart gave an account of his recent visit to Mombasa. John Morse had attended a meeting of Newton and Earlestown Community Group. A request for funding had been made, but this matter was deferred. They were also holding an evening of carols in the park on 2nd December and would like our float to be there. He also had contact details for Domestic Abuse WA12, and he would invite a representative to our meeting on 6th October,

5. Shoeboxes are now available and filled boxes are required by the end of October. Details of suitable items are shown in the attachment to the minutes of the International meeting. Where there is an expiry date on a product, this should be at least 6 months’ hence.

6. Donation: It was proposed by Ken Smith and seconded by Alan Robinson that  a should be made to Earlestown Cricket Club in respect of its Motor Neuron Disease fund raising afternoon. The motion was carried.

7. Red Cross Gaza appeal A decision regarding a donation to the British Red Cross’ Gaza Appeal will be made at next month’s business meeting.

8. McMillan Coffee morning. Les read an email from Claire relating to her Macmillan coffee event. Anyone wishing to attend should notify Claire.

9. Lunchtime meeting in October. The executive had met at the Mercure, Haydock, the previous day and had a roast lunch of either beef or chicken. The cost was £15.00. The hotel can accommodate the club on a Tuesday lunchtime with the added cost of room hire of £200.00. It was proposed by Geoff Shaw and seconded by Stuart Ainscough that we should hold a lunchtime meeting at the Mercure Hotel, on Monday 6th October. The proposal was carried with three abstentions.

10. Signage: John Morse had produced details of new signage, and he was congratulated on his results.

11. Christmas Social. President David is considering a lunchtime event on either 9th or 16th December. It is hoped that members will supply items for hampers which will be raffled on the occasion.

There being no further business, the meeting closed at 8:30pm
