Earlier on in the year we celebrated World Bee Day on May 20. Our Environmental team made the decision to include a bee project in our actions for this new Rotary year. We are in the process of developing our project so there will be more news on this later. in the meantime we invited one of past presidents to give club members a talk.

Bees: Why They Matter; A Talk by Past President Ken Boughey.

We were delighted to welcome Past President and former member Ken back to the club for a fascinating talk on bees. Ken walked us through the life cycle of bees, the remarkable diversity of bee species in the UK, and the many pressures pollinators face from habitat loss and disease to the impact of neonicotinoids. He also highlighted recent positive steps to restrict/ban these pesticides, and explained the difference between honey farming and beekeeping, emphasising stewardship, welfare, and sustainability over pure production.

Ken’s clear, engaging style left us better informed about what’s at stake and what practical actions make a difference whether in our gardens, our purchasing choices, or our community projects.

Rotary in action: Our club is developing initiatives to support pollinators and local biodiversity, and we look forward to sharing more as projects are confirmed. If you’d like to get involved or learn more, please get in touch with the club.

Thank you, Ken, for an inspiring and timely evening.
