END POLIO NOW

It is that time of year where we will again be planting crocus corms to raise awareness of this important campaign. Let us know if you are involved with a community group who would like to plant some.

As the nights draw in and the autumn leaves fall it will soon be that time to involve our community groups in planting to raise awareness for END POLIO NOW.

We have a number of regular groups who plant our corms but we are always looking for new locations where we might plant to further brighten up our area and raise awareness. This year we welcome Domestic Abuse - WA12, St Marks centre, Haydock and the Haydock Scouts and Cubs to assist with the planting.
Afull list of this year's partners are:

1. Earlestown Cricket Club: Karl Allen helped by the students at Ascent College.

2. Business for Youth: Terry Maguire who will also cover the Veteran's Memorial Garden and town centre planters.

3. Newton Community Centre: Lisa Hulme and her team willk plant in their new community garden.

4. Newton in Bloom: Catherine Donnellan -Newton High Street and St Peter's church

5. Friends of Lyme Wood: Catherine Donnellan in the country park.

6. St Mark's Centre, Haydock-Les Greenhall, Memorial Garden.

BACKGROUND ON END POLIO NOW

One of the principal objectives of Rotary is "End Polio Now*

For over 30 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world.

The polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three, with over 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary.

With eradication now closer than ever, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s latest campaign, Purple4Polio, is designed to unite communities to engage in activities as part of the final push to eradicate polio for good

The campaign has produced many pieces of media coverage, helping to raise awareness of how important it is to end polio now and forever.

The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child to indicate they have received their life saving oral polio vaccine. This year, Rotary are aiming to go even further and plant 10 million purple crocus corms!
