LUNCH MEETING

Tue, Jul 16th 2024 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Venue: HPGC
Speakers: STEVE DAVIES, DAVID HARRISON: SANKEY CANAL RESTORATION GROUP.
Fellowship Stewards: CRAIG ROBERTS + ALAN ROBINSON

At our lunch meeting today we welcomed Steve Davies and David Harrison from the Sankey Canal Restoration Society. Dave gave a talk about the history of the Sankey canal from its opening in 1757 until it was officially abandoned in 1963. He traces its route from Spike Island, Widnes through to St Helens.

The ultimate aim of the society is to restore the canal to full navigation by recreating the historic waterway.. This should preserve a significant part of our heritage whilst enabling local communities to reap the wider health and well-being benefits associated with linear waterway corridors within Widnes, Warrington and St Helens.

A significant portion of the route runs through our own Rotary area and our club is pleased to support this initiative.
