Tue, Feb 20th 2024 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Venue: HPGC.
Speaker: GWYNETH MILLARD- GLOBAL SIGHT SOLUTIONS.
Fellowship Stewards: LES CLANCY + VIV CLANCY.

The lunch time speaker was Rotarian Gwyneth Millard (RC St Helens) and an ambassador for Global Sight Solutions.

She enlightened club members on the work of Global Sight Solutions, a Rotary Charity that provides:
*Eye hospitals - Training for eye surgeons - Microscopes and laser equipment.
*Eye Buses - Hospital transport - Mobile eye screening camps.
*Cataract surgery - treatment of glaucoma -retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy.

The current target the charity has set itself is to carry out 180,000 cataract operations per year and build 10 new hospitals by 2025.

By way of a little history:
The charity was founded in the 1990's by Dr Sam Das MBE, former eye surgeon and opthalmic consultant at Guildford's Royal Surrey Hospital. His ambition was to to provide 1 million free cataract operations to patients in the Indian sub ciontinent, Africa and other economically emerging areas who are too poor to afford the cost of treatment themselves.

It is a fact that there are 50 million avoidably blind men, women and children worldwide who cannot afford to have their sight restored and Global Sight Solutions is working to provide services to tackle this issue.
