Each year our club presents two students with our John Vardy Memorial Awards.
John Vardy OBE was the founder of our club in 1937 and we remember him by giving two of our local high school students a cash award to help them on their journey to higher education. John was also an educationalist, who was the Head at Redbank School, so it is very relevant that we honour his name in this way.
Our two participating schools are Hope Academy and Golborne High and the awards are given to the student in recognition of their all round contribution to the life of the school. The students, who are selected by the school, have left to pursue a qualification in further or higher education or a degree at university.
The presentation of the award in more normal times would give the students the opportunity to visit the club, with their teacher and present to us their ambitions and goals for the future. This year, because of COVID restrictions, we presented the awards via zoom at our evening meeting on TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER.
The student from Hope Academy was Sarah Henderson who was introduced by her teacher, Damian Gent. Sarah is continuing her studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The student from Golborne High School was Megan Sappelsa who was introduced by Andrea Hickey. Megan is continuing her studies at Winstanley College.
WE wish both students success for the future and hope the award of £200 each will come in useful to help with books or other equipment they might need.
