Rod Stokes introduces Ken Smith speaking on 'Shoeboxes'

Tue, Aug 4th 2009 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

PE David Fishburne presided in the absence of President Philip and Rod Stokes introduced Ken Smith from the RC of Wythenshawe to speak on the Rotary Shoebox Scheme.

Ken stated that it started in Rotary District 1280 in 1994 and was initially intended for sending boxes of gifts at Christmas to children in lasi, Romania. Since then the scheme has grown throughout Britain and Ireland and tens of thousands of boxes have since been sent. This figure increases rapidly each year and by tying in with other aid organisations we are able to distribute toys, household items and teenage items to deprived people in many countries wherever the need is greatest.

The main distribution times are still at Christmas and Easter but deliveries are made throughout the year as required. Countries to benefit have included Romania,Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania, Croatia and Kosovo.

Distribution of boxes from October 2008 to March 2009
