Lymm Rotary has been involved in the fight against Polio from the start, raising thousands of pounds towards Rotary's push to rid the world of this dreadful disease.
Rotary started the campaign in 1988 with a multi-year project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines.
By 2009 Rotary had raised over $800 million in support of the World Health Organisation, which prompted the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to pledge $355 million and issue Rotary a challenge grant of $200 million if Rotary raised a further $200 million within two years. Rotary did it with 5 months to spare.
Todate Rotary's world wide movement has raised over $1.2 billion, and Polio Cases are down over 99% since 1988. Only 2 countries are left - we are almost there.
