The competition was held for
students from local primary schools and was sponsored by Horwich Rotary Club. The competition enabled students from year 4
and year 5 to showcase their cookery skills, creativity and come up with
imaginative recipes for their afternoon tea menus. The final had been the
accumulation of mini heats within each school where parents and governors had
been invited to sample the delights of the afternoon tea designs. The winning
menu is being showcased at an exhibition which the school is hosting as part of
its 450 year celebrations.
Riya Hasija and Ellanor Purtill, year 5 students from Blackrod Primary
School won first prize having designed a classic afternoon tea menu. They made a variety of sandwiches including
cheese and homemade chutney, and served it with homemade cakes and desserts and
a pot of tea. The judges praised their
attention to detail, creativity, taste, texture and overall presentation in
line with the theme of the ‘Great British Afternoon Tea’.
St Catherine’s Primary School, St Mary’s RC Primary School Chorley New
Road and Horwich Parish Primary School all took part – showcasing afternoon tea
menus including a seaside themed afternoon tea with popcorn cakes and edible
sand and another which had an individually designed tea cup napkin holder. It was a difficult choice for judges and all
young people did exceptionally well.
The winning team won a bakery kit comprising of a recipe book each, a £10 google play voucher and bakery equipment and ingredients.
Amanda Ferson, Head of Food Technology commented, “All of the entries were of an exceptionally high standard and each student showed creativity and motivation. They had really thought about their entries. The excitement of the challenge inspired students to create a great menu. We had excellent feedback from all students who took part and we would like to thank all students who participated, Horwich Rotary Club and the staff and schools who took part.”
