They were joined by members of the ATC for a short service of remembrance conducted by Rev David Griffiths.
The memorial was dedicated in 1955. It was an idea of Rtn. George Brookes to place a plaque on Allance Bridge but as more people came aboard it evolved into what we see today. It was unveiled by Wing Commander B. O. Dias, OBE, DFC and dedicated by Rtn. The Rev. D. Dick, president of Rotary in Britain and Ireland and Moderator of The Church of Scotland. The service was overseen by Rtn. The Rev. Douglas Michell, vicar of Horwich and member of the club and watched by 200 people.
It was noteworthy that the Charter Night menu card that year, signed by all the guests, included Peter Fletcher and Jack Harrison who both went on to become members and presidents of the club.
The following year saw a famous Australian sportsman visit the Bomber Memorial: Keith Miller the great all-rounder; he came to pay his tribute to the pilot F/S Joe Timperon R.A.A.F. Jack Harrison had the privilege of meeting him which led to lifelong correspondence with him till he died. - Rtn. Ted Wisedale
