22/23 Meeting Reports

Reports of our weekly meetings

President Brian welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, his last meeting as President. Thought for the Day was delivered by John Anderson, highlighting the year just passed and about to be reflected on. Business Matters President Elect reported on attending the 1010 conference at the Rothes Halls. Various presentations, some good and some less so! First up was a “real time” presentation on help in Ukraine, followed by two garden projects, concluding on presentation from our President covering our centenary year, which was the best the day (evident by the approaches Brian had later in the day to present to others and to take on some Area & District posts). Powerful presentation on chemical warfare from Armenian and Iraqi ladies who are peace ambassadors. Also, the presentation by Perth on their international project in India’s red-light districts where they are helping to take kids off the street. However, the Ukrainian lady now in Scotland who read a letter from her husband at home was the most hard hitting of the morning. John Anderson reported on the Purvis visit. He and others were blown away with the business expansion and the diversity of businesses they run. This visit keeps our close ties strong with the team at Purvis who are keen to continue partnering with us. Letter from Dunfermline High School on annual awards, see attached scan. Thank you to Graham Steedman for facilitating the electrical connectivity for the newly install defibrillator at St Andrews Erskine Church. Good Press coverage continues with article and picture on outgoing and incoming president, incoming Senior Vice President, and Area Governor. Treasurer reported to all in attendance the challenge with card payment for meal payments and the work around where he has to paying for all meals personally and then transferring money from Rotary account to him as recompense. Enquiring about a Business Card he uncovered we need to have a new general account, which will only be single signatory. This needs club approval for this new account and Business Card application, which was received from all Rotarians in attendance. Presentation Our departing President then gave an excellent Valedictory of the very busy year just past, where it is worth mentioning the £40,000 Rotary Club of Dunfermline has given to charity in this year just past. President Brian then concluded in the normal manner by awarding Rotarian of the Year, this time to two people, David Fraser, and John Sim. VOT Ralph McCran delivered an innovative vote of thanks, taking on the role of Headmaster, robes and all, giving an end of year report to former Headmaster Brian, AKA Our Head Boy. 1st exam pass was mid-August when Brian was able to secure our return to Garvock House Hotel. Charter Dinner exam was a challenge, especially due to some truancy attending previous charter dinners study events, however a pass mark was secured. The final exam pass was also gained for the Summer Ball, despite a few disrupting students “skiving off”. Final summary report was - Brian should be very proud of what he achieved in what was a very successful year, in no small part due to Brian’s hard work, helping us to emerge from the Pandemic as a more energetic, vibrant club.

President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, the first of our second century. The turn out on such a lovely evening when a beer in the garden must have been templating, was superb. Thought for the Day was delivered by Tom Sunter. An interesting new approach by first character assassinating some Rotarians, before finishing a positive note on our future outlook. I am told the rhyme made up with comments for Ronnie Pooke and thing that rhymed were held back for another day! Business Matters Mike Williams reported on Edinburgh Rotary Golf Day @ Brunsfield. Our team was made up of Ralph McCran, Mike Williams, Keith McFarlane and Danny McLaughlin, who was a late substitute for David Gemmill. 4th overall, however performance more than made up for in raffle draw were the team cleaned up, with raised questions round the room. Keith McFarlane reported, details on Dumbarnie Golf Links day out becoming clearer. £87 per head. 24 spaces, and plan is to ask Rotarians who would like to attend first, and then open to guests. Date for golfers diaries, 1st October. December meetings dates were shared with Rotarians in advance by John Sim in Ronnie Pooke’s absence. This was to allow members to tell us their preference when our last meeting prior to Christmas should be. 4th December Christmas Lunch 8th December Thursday Meeting 15th December No meeting as clash with Marine Band Concert 17th & 18 December Santas Sleigh (to be confirmed) 22nd December Thursday Meeting Question, do we still have meeting on 22nd despite this being so close to Christmas and lots on in December. Vote in the room outcome was yes, we should meet on 22nd. Secretary to advise hotel, Programme to think about something suitable for that evening and we look forward to an excellent turn out! Presentation Our new President gave an unscripted speech on plans for coming year. Great attendance on such a beautiful evening, although five from eleven council members were not in attendance. After a year celebrating and reflecting, he is keen we move our focus back to evolving and maturing our club, continuing being one of the most healthy and active clubs in our District. President Ralph also outlined plans for each area that are well advanced or concluding for delivery.

President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, follow a change of process where this now occurs after the meal and flows straight through business matters and presentation. John Anderson’s thought for the day highlighted the worth waiting for tech thriller that was to follow “after our food”. Business Matters David Fraser reported while doing a check and balance of meal payments last week he noticed one member had their account deducted twice for the meal. David has no means of identifying who this was, so asks members to check their bank accounts and if they find duplicate deductions, to reach out to David and let him know. President Ralph shared comparison with our coming years plans to RI President Jennifer Jones imagine statements “where members act to make their dreams reality and to get the most out of their club experiences”. Secretary was impressed he had read what is a very long email, and section Ralph read out is at the bottom of this meeting note. Announcement David Lyth let members know he and Helen have decided to put their house in Townhill up for sale and move to Edinburgh. They both love living in Dunfermline, however, agree with their daughter it would be better to live closer. They do also have four grandchildren in Dunfermline they look after, so hopes he can still attend Thursday meetings. Best Santa I ever saw, so hopefully we can still rely on David’s services at Santa’s Sleigh time. Presentation Bill Spence gave a well planned and constructed presentation on our RIBI web site content. You can find this at – DunfermlineRotary.club, or you can search for “Rotary Club Dunfermline”. So easy to find and no excuses. Worth highlighting to people when you perform a member’s logon, use the Template Login option. We would like all members to logon at least once. While it asks for a username, you should be able to use your email address and Rotary password - if you have set one! Here is links to reset your account https://dms.rotarygbi.org/login - see bottom of page. Once into this, you can update your profile, including adding a picture. Bill also intimated he intends to stand down as our web administrator in the next year, so important we get somebody (preferably more than one) to take on ownership of our RIBI webpages. Google Calendar – action from Bill Spence presentation, invite to Google Calendar sent to all members email addresses and all are encouraged to add into their preferred mobile phone calendar, so dates / details of upcoming events are in Rotarians diaries by default. This link will give access to the Google calendar -https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=ZHVuZmVybWxpbmVyb3RhcnljbHViQGdtYWlsLmNvbQ- if you have a Google calendar already, you just need to make sure Dunfermline Rotary Club is ticked for this to be included in what is presented. Keith “Filofax” McFarlane gave a vote of thanks to our webmaster for his hard work administering our pages over the years and time taken for this evenings briefing, despite disappointingly he will be handing over the reigns soon.

In the absence of Secretary John I get to reprise my role of reporting on last night's meeting .?? The Harvieston room was buzzing with another excellent attendance and only 1 seat in the room unfilled. Joan Fraser from Inner Wheel was a very welcome guest to hear our guest speaker Sandra Beveridge the organiser of Dunfermline Foodbank. There were excellent menu choices including pork and either seabass or sea bream - we argued about that on our table as no one could recall for certain. You will be surprised to learn that Charlie complained. This week it was the size of his fish which he thought was a tiddler. Eric suggested that an illegal net had been used as a fish that size would surely have escaped easily from a legally sized net. Sean made his debut giving us a Thought for the Day. Members overwhelmingly applauded Sean's ditty and look forward to encores in the future as part of the Thought for the Day team - the door is always open to others to join this prestigious team of John, Ian & Sean. The most important announcement of the evening was the monthly draw winners - £60 Jack & £40 Russell - well done gents. Andrew Watson attended with a box overflowing with new directories for distribution to members. They are stored in the lectern and will be distributed further at future meetings. Many thanks to Andrew for his excellent work. Unprompted Ronnie volunteered a well prepared and comprehensive report on upcoming meetings as follows:

Cost of external cabinet is £495 (exc VAT), plus installation cost that church could cover. There is a precedent for this kind of support where we contribute £250, as confirmed by Past President Brian. Only matter raised was St Leonards church is due to close (may explain why moving defibrillator to outside). Tom Arnott raised question of why such decisions were not taken by Trustees now. President Ralph welcomed all to our meeting this evening, including guests Elizabeth Steer and Jackie Mutter. TFD was delivered by John Anderson mentioning us all looked forward to hearing some old guy’s wisdom and experiences in the Odds n Sods presentation but begged them not to sing! Business Matters Fundraising (Ian Wilson) – Marine Band concert, trying to arrange meeting to conclude details round people being on leave, or contracting covid. There is a new challenge round changed band abatement policy for their fee. Looks like new policy will have caveat round where any profits are donated, which may not be in our best interest. Discussions to conclude to allow approach for this year’s concert to be decided. Formal handover of Cherry Tree project to Carnegie Trust occurred, with pictures including our sponsor Purvis to go along with a press release. West Fife gift of commemorative park bench marking our centenary year occurred, with past president Brain able receive on behalf of the club. Community (Ian Morris) – Foodbank collection donations delivered, that weighed in at 446kg, or half a ton, or 500 meals. However, that food would be gone in a week! Thank you to Ian for coming up with this initiative and a coordinating delivery. Bill Livingston is helping us with attention grabbing press release. District (Ralph) – there is a District Council Meeting in Aberdeen that President Ralph cannot attend, and neither can senior vice or junior vice. Asking for a volunteer, otherwise we will have to submit apologies. Programme (Ronnie) – on behalf of Ronnie, Ralph asked if members could give attendance at the President Dinner on 29th September priority for this black-tie evening, as we conclude on our Centenary Celebrations. £25 for a three-course meal with wine and some great speakers. Sport (Keith) – there are 10 couples registered for the Couples Golf at the weekend, not to late for anyone else who wants to participate. Other Matters Raised Charlie noticed previous Weekly Meeting Notes reported on possible new member not progressing membership due to perceived cost of Rotary membership and asked what we intended to do about this. Intention is for Council to examine our overall cost of being an active member and what could be done about this, and report back to membership. Presenter The Secretary did start to capture some bullet points of Tom and David’s presentation, like – RUC levels of hospitality with visiting colleagues and the mandatory Poitín partaken prior to flight home. Reciprocated via RUC rest and recuperation at Auchterarder for RUC constables, with it being very evident how long it took them to unwind, often diving for cover when harmless sudden loud noises occurred. Or David’s healthy fear of criminals (and sometimes Police) dogs, sometimes more than guns. And Tom’s overall responsibility for all naval movements on the water ways round Northern Ireland, including hunting for people smuggling fertilizer as ingredient for Semtex in a bomb. However, Secretary gave up as the stories kept coming, putting down his pen and enjoyed a well crafted presentation from Tom and David. VOT David Gemmell had the unenviable challenge of delivering a vote of thanks. After a sobering start that made everyone think and be grateful for services delivered by our armed forces and law officers, this double act lightened things up as they progressed onto entertaining stories, captivating their audience.

President Ralph welcomed all to our meeting this evening, including guest speakers Pauline McGeeevor from the CR Smith Hand Picked program and Kevin Richards a Hand Picked volunteer. After the days sad news of Queen Elizabeth II passing, thought for the day was not delivered. Instead, President Ralph presided over a minute’s silence, follow by a toast to The King. Business Matters Announcement – Ralph let Rotarians know that Bill and Wendy Spence were today celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. Celebrations have been curtailed a little, as Wendy has tested positive for Covid. However, our congratulations go to Bill and Wendy. Sport (Sean) – in Keith’s absence Sean gave a report on the Couples Golf. Downpours of rain at start of day caused people to ask if event would happen, however we were blessed with a glorious afternoon for golf in tee shirts and shorts. Shotgun start helped with overall duration. Eventual winning pair were Helen Doran (for the third time) and Ronnie Pook, with runners up Nora Yeates and Alan Condie. There is no keeping the trophy after three wins run! Programme (Ronnie) – OktoberFest on 6th October, we currently have 9 attendees. Sport (Ronnie) - Dumbarnie on 1st October, 5 people so far have told us they will attend, with 24 spaces available. Please get in touch if you plan to attend, as we are looking at potential cancelation. togmcf@hotmail.com Presenter https://handpickedscotland.co.uk/ Pauline McGeevor opened presentation, who runs the Hand Picked program for Gerard Eadie, founder of the Hand Picked initiative after seeing a gap in the Prince’s Trust work. This program was established to focus on youth employment opportunity / support development for school leavers or young unemployed. Initially Gerard went out to other companies to encourage them to employ young people, with response being most school leavers do not want to work, do not have required skills, just not job ready. Gerard pointed out that young people do have skills they need, but employers need to employ young people to develop / train to employer needs and become job ready. Gerard was successful signing up numerous companies to support, in turn establishing a program dedicated to helping young people. The support program is run over 9 weeks, a school term, to take young people through a structed education format where everything from CV and covering letter, to actual interview is covered. They support approximately 80 people per year. The intention is to give young people the skills to apply for work and grab employers’ attention. Kevin Richards (Past West Fife President) then shared his experiences as a volunteer who goes into schools to deliver the 9 week program, which is very structed with supporting material to ensure consistent delivery. To prepare volunteers, they attend a training session at the CR Smith premises. The main objective to start with is to get the young people’s attention, often overcoming challenging personalities, then encouraging them to share personal information that could potentially be included within covering letters to grab employers’ attention as they work their applicant CV review process. Sessions are run focusing on interview preparation, with mock interview day, including waiting in reception, and being taken to interview room! At end of program, they also have a workbook to take home that is a great tool for job applications going forward. There are number of Dunfermline central employers engaged, but also large national and multinational companies who in some cases may also provide work experience days. If Rotarians are keen to explore this volunteering opportunity, please contact Neil Wilson who will coordinate on our behalf with the Hand Picked team. The Hand Picked team are keen for Rotarians to get involved. neilwilson50000@gmail.com VOT David Sommerville delivered the vote of thanks, mentioning this is an area our Rotary Club has provided support to in the past. However, it was aimed more at possible high achievers, although later moved to a broader coverage via engagement with Tower House. Rotarians have lots of experience that could be beneficial to this program, and they will get a lot of satisfaction back in return, so he is hopeful we will have some volunteers coming forward. President Ralph will be absent next week, as presenting at Inner Wheel as is custom each year. Any advice on delivery of this would be welcome.

An excellent 28 members attended – give or take as it was a rough count Interesting menu choices included panko breaded pork with spaghetti. David F when announcing the monthly draw highlighted the danger of eating spaghetti whilst wearing a shirt. I must confess that I too suffered a slight spaghetti sauce stain which I cunningly tried to mask by throwing my coffee cup over myself. Apologies to those present for my disheveled and very wet appearance. Many thanks I think to Neil for his photo for the record and for sharing it so widely.. Comprehensive and topical Thought for the Day from Ian I intimated to members news of the passing of former member Dr Sandy Mackenzie who passed away very shortly after his wife. David F gave a short eulogy. I also intimated the resignation of Jim Payne as a member of the Club. Jim has a number of other commitments and feels with his recent move to Bridge of Allan that he is unable to participate and be involved in meetings and activities as he would wish to be and as he feels a member of a club should be. We wish him well. The monthly draw winners are Russell £60 & Neil £40. BIG PUSH Brian B followed up his comprehensive email of yesterday promoting the Quiz on 4 November at the Clubhouse at McKane Park. This has been a tremendous fun event in the past with members either forming their own teams to come to the event (the competitive ones) or forming teams ad hoc on the night. Brian asks for your support for this by letting him know by next Thursday if you can come and how many tickets you require. NB there is an auction for a 4 ball at Archerfield sourced by Andy Croxford from his contact Peter Proud. In Ian W’s absence I highlighted that the Santa Dash is just over 3 weeks away. The website, ticket site, flyers, posters, publicity from Kingdom FM, Press, Facebook etc are just about to take off. More on this weekly! I also sought members views on the proposed price of £15 for tickets to the Marine Band Concert. The views expressed were that this is reasonable David F having highlighted that the price for the last event in 2019 had been £12.50. We were entertained by the recovered members Andy C and Angus on the Future of the Glen having had the opportunity to give their presentation a dry run at the Carnegie Big Chiefs meeting in New York a couple of weeks ago. Much interesting information about both the past and the future plans was shared and members were much engaged given the importance of the Glen to the City. Jack gave the vote of thanks. Next week’s meeting sees the quick return of David McColgan. David spoke a few months ago on his main role with the British Heart Foundation and many members spoke afterwards of how entertaining he was. David is a man of many parts and returns to entertain us on his interest in the political scene particularly here in Scotland and his blogging. Chatham House rules apply! The Host is Pip, the Vote of Thanks to be from Andrew W and the receptionists Graham & Russell.

December Marine Band Concerts: still concluding on last overheads but estimated to be £8,000 raised. John Haxton reported on a great effort considering this year was about resurrecting the concerts again after the Covid lay off. 610 tickets sold in total, with 199 of those coming from members or members contacts. Sea Scouts helped with bucket collections on the night that also contributed to the total. Hopefully this lodges the concerts back into the towns festive calendar of events. John thanked David Steel and David Fraser for their help and support. December Santa’s Sleigh High Street and Tesco Collections: £2,500 collected (should increase to £3,000 with gift aid claim) Therefore, total so far this Rotary Year (including the gift aid) £12,000

Technology Tournament at St. Columba's HS is hoped will happen in June. Meeting with all clubs collaborating scheduled for 27th to conclude arrangements. President Ralph returned to the fold after his and others antipodean adventure. Welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, including our guest Ian Grieve. TFD the day was delivered by John Anderson with storm Otto on the horizon, with follow up talk of another beast from the east. Main concern of most in attendance was access to gold course this weekend. Looks like more of a wet cold beast, that the snowy one we all remember. The President also thanked his stand-ins for last three weeks, David Walker and Alan Condie. Business Matters David Walker is on the mend after his hip operation last week. Member retention appears to be a running challenge, and Allan would like to know more about views of our club members. To help with this he has triggered a members survey to better understand members wants and he will share the outcome when people have responded. While it asks for email address, Allan will maintain anonymity when he reports to members on their collective desires for the future of our club. There are also plans for Council to perform a health check on our club as via assessment tools available. President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, including guests Anne McFarlane and Cynthia Black TFD was delivered by Ian Morris who touched on our recent 101st Charter Dinner, Charter speaker, Friendship Award made to Brian Blanchflower supporting Rotarians in need and the long overdue PHF award for Graham Steedman. Business Matters President reported that after 15 years of delivering TFD, John Anderson has decided it is time to complete his stepping back from this role. Thank you, John, for developing this into the key part of our meetings. We have a few people who cover now, but looking for more to come forward to assist, so plea for some more volunteers to come forward Junior Vice President David reported on his recent attendance of the virtual District Council Meeting. District continue to work with planned deficit in coming year, as they continue working down their reserves to a more reasonable level. However, it does look like capitation fees for each Rotarian will return, looking like £6 per head for coming year (still to be approved), which is still well below previous levels. £7500 has been budgeted for an image consultant, as part of a wider program looking at how the Rotary brand can be improved to attract more members. President Ralph reported on Big Help out initiative, as part of upcoming coronation. Unfortunately, that does clash with our Gin Festival and Daffodil Tea, so we are committed, and we need people helping who are aware of how those are delivered on the day. Primary School Quiz was held on 22nd, using excellent material supplied by District. St. Margaret’s won after a tie break. They now progress to the District Round. Charity Golf on 4th April has now 16 teams entered. Mike Williams team has a vacancy, so anyone looking to take part but was not able to form a team, please let Mike know. Raffle on the day has some excellent prizes, including a four ball at Castle Stewart, so please publicise to your guests. Daffodil Tea is coming together as per recent comms from Neil. Number of attendees (inc. carers) concluding, but please remember to let Neil know if you can help on the day. Gin festival is now only 6 weeks away. Thomson Cooper are sponsoring glasses again and we also have a Tee Shirt sponsor. Looking for Gin sponsors as usual, so please work your network to help please. If you have any sponsorship options, please let President Ralph know. Presentation Ian Morris delivered an excellent members tale, outlining his career and lifetime challenges with OCD. Ian started as a YTS at Almore Carpets as a fitter. Great foundation as he learnt lots about the carpet trade prior to moving into sales. He bought the business when he was 26 years old. Tonight, standing in front of friends and customers, he is keen to explain to all his OCD diagnosis. Ian worked very long hours, more than most, as his OCD primary symptom of compulsion meant he had to make sure everything was correct, covered and checked, including the small stuff. His preference for long to do lists, including making use of lists written on his hands as he went, helped him manage the stress of running a business. People with OCD are very good at their jobs because of desire to do everything to such a high level. That does however generate its own stress, making OCD worse and the vicious circle continues While Ian enjoyed his work, age does have an impact on all of us being able to absorb stress to the level we could when younger, and time had come to retire. Ian can report he is much better now retired. VOT was delivered by Gerry Gillespie, who like all of us was a customer of Ian’s, referring to his keenness to get use out of the 25 year guarantee for carpets bought! He congratulated Ian on opening up to his friends in attendance on his life with OCD. Gerry often notices how Ian is always so well prepared, be that for TFD ore VOT, all delivered in a humorous, entertaining, and informative way. Tonight’s was one of the best talks we have had at Rotary and huge thank you to Ian.

President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, including our speaker, Bill McKinley. TFD was delivered by Ian Morris who covered a nail biting study in Wales – I Googled it, no joy. Also, the SNP Treasurer fun and 25 meter cable range for electric vehicles! President Ralph then informed all those in attendance of the sad news regarding Russell Matthews, who passed away last night (Wednesday). This was followed by a moments silence. Russell’s son-in-law has been in touch and will share details of the funeral via The Secretary so can be distributed to all members who wish to pay their respects. Business Matters Andrew Watson highlighted to everyone the return of The Garden Party. The event is open to Rotarians and partners / friends. Fun event with buffet meal and hopefully some games in the garden. Please let Andrew or Graham Steedman know ASAP if you can attend. David Sommerville reported on the Schools Quiz, with our heat winners St Margarets RC PS coming seventh, although scoring was very close. Overall winner was Portmoak Primary with Duloch Primary coming 2nd - both teams progress to District 1010 Final in Aberdeen in June Ronnie reported on a slight change of plan to our programme schedule. Intention is on 4th May we will have an outside meeting, most likely at Canmore House for food upstairs and maybe a quiz. Watch this space for more information. Presentation Ronnie introduced Bill McKinley who has visited us before. His current career is autonomous cars, but he spoke about Artificial Intelligence (AI), AKA The March of the Machines (not his words). He took Rotarians on an interesting history of AI, also explaining levels of AI – Narrow Intelligence, which is performing a single task, like call centre screening. Weak AI, which would be something like a satnav in your car. Artificial General Intelligence, which is where we are now with more advanced systems in use. Artificial Super Intelligence, which is the future. We all come across AI continually in our day to day life and it is becoming more and more advanced, so much so we start to not notice. Streaming options from Youtube / Netflix based on your history showing personal preferences, immediate decisions on finance applications, Shazam app for telling you details of a song just via listening to a few lines. He went on to explain Chat GPT and the power of the tool today and they way this will be improving even further in the next release. If anyone would like to see the power of AI in pictures, try installing Google Lens and point it at something you do not know about. VOT was delivered by the Secretary. It was reassuring that despite these examples of bleeding edge technology, we all get caught out, like our presented, by a faulty cable, in tonight’s case a cable to connect a laptop to an overhead projector (hence the poor backup we ended up using). The Secretary was also able to quote examples from his and Matt Brown’s working life at IBM and the Watson AI solution that famously took on the champions of the US Jeopardy quiz - and won. Watson @ IBM has become the corner stone of their AI development. From all the geeks in the room, and the geeks who did not know there were geeks until Bill’s talk, we thank him for an entertaining and enlighten presentation.

President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, including guest Ian Grieve, asking him to pass on our best wishes to West Fife. The countdown for our current President is underway – 6 to go! TFTD Delivered this week by Ian Morris who touched on various points including our SVP’s questionnaire outcome, UK coming second last at Eurovision and Margaret Steedman’s Coronation Lunch for members of Inner Wheel, where lots of us were the plus 1. Business Matters President Ralph reported on Ginfest. 55 people over the course of the weekend helped, including 16 Inner Wheelers. As an organisation we are blessed with a depth of support that allows us to put on such an event, that this year is estimated to deliver a £18,000 profit, that will be donated to various charities. In 2019 we delivered £10,000 profit for our first in year, and in 2022 our return after covid was £16,000 profit. Centre spread this week in Dunfermline Press for Ginfest and we are informed there will be an article in The Courier. All great publicity for our club. 2024 data to be set soon. Charity Donations, we need nominations for consideration by Friday 26th May please. Andrew Watson reported on the Garden Party, which cannot occur as planned at The Keavil House Hotel due to them now hosting Ukrainian refugees. He is looking to secure the services of Garvock House Hotel, hopefully on the same date – watch for details. Andrew also reported he had recently seen Eric Keenan who although suffering from Long Covid continues to be on the mend, now getting out and about and hopefully back with us at Rotary soon. John Sim reported on some visits. He, President Ralph and Sean Doran attended the recent Round Table AGM, where Thomas Docherty was “passing out”. This helps with keeping bridges open for future members. At the AGM the £14,000 profit for their Beer Festival was reported, also highlighting Round Table could not have delivered on their obligations for Saturday night without the help of Rotary. Thank you for volunteering on the night to – Brian and Claire Blanchflower Alan and Jackie Mutter Bill Spence Mike Williams John also reported on him joining one of the many Rotary Fellowships – IYFR, which is International Yachting Fellowship Rotarians, which really trips off the tongue. There is an East of Scotland Group, with no boats! There is also a Clyde Group with four boats, now five. 29th April was first day sail, with three boats heading to Rothesay for a meal at The Black Bull. Crew assigned to Barolo were a couple from Howe of Fife Rotary club, who via an Albert Bartlett annual donation of potatoes raise a good amount of money for charity. There are more sailing events scheduled and John, Jane and Barolo plan to attend where they can. Worth people watching for these fellowship groups to broaden your Rotary experience. John next year plans to try Rotary Retro Automobile Fellowship (classic cars) and he has seen a Gin Fellowship! https://www.iyfrgbi.org/index.html https://rraf.co.uk/ https://www.ginfellowship.org/ Presentation Alan Condie gave an excellent presentation on the results of the recent membership survey. Much debate and feedback followed, that was captured and will be explored. More information to be shared with members as the incoming President and his team identify target areas.
President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, which as our Annual General Meeting, followed by a business meeting with various points to be communicated with members. TFTD Delivered this week by Gerry Gillespie, standing in for Sean. Challenging as, Sean’s thought for the day was built round other definitions of an AGM- annual giggling marathon, aromatic gin measure, accomplish golf memories, etc etc. Much thanks and applause for Gerry standing in. Business Matters Keith McFarlane reported on the Gavel Final against Turriff, scheduled for 1st June. Team plus what for now is a “substitute” selected, who will travel to venue in Forfar / Brechin area and hopefully come home with the spoils of victory. Keith also reported on the Capitals Challenge on 13th June. Again, team being finalised. Bill Spence gave report on limited information regarding Ukrainian refugees soon to be staying the Keavil House Hotel. No firm details yet, although looking like there will be no children and circa 70 people. At this stage Bill asks if we could just reserve some funds from our Charity account for possible support, which was unanimously agreed by all in attendance. President Ralph reported on some outcomes of this weeks Council Meeting – Recommended approach going forward to set an agreed percentage (based on event delivery contribution) of profit from Gin Festival given to Inner Wheel Charity Account, as opposed to setting and agreeing a figure every year. This allows Inner Wheel to plan for income, and possibly contribute more going forward to make the event even more successful. Council recommendation is setting at 20%, rounded up to the nearest £100. Ronnie proposed we consider a higher amount of 25%. Tom Sunter proposed £4500, which is the 2023 estimation of 25% as discussed. Small debate ensued, which also highlighted the level of help Inner Wheel provide for the Daffodil Tea. Vote taken, and 22 from 28 people agreed to 25% rounded up to nearest £100 going forward, which for this year is expected to be round about £4500. Meals costs and venue was also reviewed at the last Council meeting, as had happened previously in this Rotary year, however this time we had membership survey data. The result was the following outcome – Meeting frequency to remain at weekly. Meeting venue to remain at GHH. We will explore food options changes when in GHH through the Rotary year – i.e., buffet evenings. Finally, as per feedback received when membership survey results were reviewed last week, social media use was examined. WhatsApp specifically, which is now regarded as an important tool, underpinning emails, allowing for much quicker communications when required. Use and material shared to date, has on some occasions not been to everyone’s appreciation. The WhatsApp group is now renamed Rotary Official. A Code of Conduct has been drafted, but decision taken to not share for now, instead setting member use guidance based on what we would deem appropriate for distribute via email communications for club material. This was agreed and accepted by all for WhatsApp group use by members. AOCB Ronnie raised the question of a donation to Russell Matthews nominated charity after his recent passing. There was no collection for a charity at Russell’s funeral, so not clear where we would donate to. Secretary to reach out to Russell’s family for a charity and it was agreed we would donate £250. It was also suggested there should be a standing order for Rotary default donations in such an event. However, that will need to wait for the next SGM where it can be an agenda item. David Steele ended the business meeting by thanking members for his Honorary Membership awarded at this evening’s AGM. David has been a member for 22 years after his retirement from The Navy and values membership as much now as he did then. Presentation AGM was separate to business meeting and material shared as per normal AGM process.

16 members attended TFTD drafted by Sean and read by me in his absence Keith reported on success in the Gavel Final of Wednesday night winning 11-5 against Turriff. He thanked all 15 members who participated in the course of the campaign and Neil Wilson who organised the event for District. That was Keith’s 6th Gavel success. Following the email to members with 18 charities (listed below) as proposed by members for donation and Council’s recommendation that we agree upon 10 charities Treasurer David reported that he had received only 10 email responses from members voting on this. Canvassing opinion last night it was clear that members wish more time to respond with their votes and achieve a more representative view of the membership on which charities to support. I have copied the process below and would be obliged if you could respond and participate in this decision. Members had agreed to donate £250 to Russell’s favourite charity. Treasurer John corresponded with the family and has been advised that Russel donated regularly to two namely Marie Curie and Scottish Love in Action therefore members agreed to donate £125 to each. Next weekend’s meeting is Leadership Awards to the “Heads” at the 4 local schools. It is acknowledged that there has been confusion in who should organise this resulting in late invitations and at this point only acceptances from Dunfermline HS. It was agreed to go ahead regardless however next year’s programme committee should consider rescheduling this event for the end of March before they go on Easter holiday then study leave. The meeting on 15 June will have a speaker namely Kateryna who is Ukrainian and being hosted here on the subject of her experiences. The meeting on 22 June is the Club Assembly The meeting on 29 June is my valedictory. Prior to that on Sunday 25 June is the GARDEN PARTY at Garvock where sun permitting we shall socialise al fresco too The monthly draw winners were David Gemmell & …..i can’t remember! There is £12,000 available from GINFEST profit to make donations at this time leaving £6,000 in the bank for the start of the next Rotary year as was the case last July. This is after taking a/c of £4,500 to Inner Wheel and £250 to one of Russel’s favourite charities. The proposal is to make 10 donations – 2 x £2,000 and 8 x £1,000 = £12,000. You must reply to this email to Treasurer David direct by 8pm on Wednesday 4 June with your SEVEN (7) choices. David will then confirm at Thursday evening’s meeting the top 10 who will receive monies with the 2 most popular receiving £2,000 each. Members proposals for you to choose from are listed below. President Ralph welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, especially those attending from Dunfermline High School – Iain MacLeod, Depute Head and Head Girl Maya, Head Boy Noah. TFTD Sean Doran provided his thought for the day, covering hackers, El Nino effect on weather causing hot feet and thirst, and tonight concluding on our donations from GinFest profit after recent members vote. Business Matters Treasurer David reported that 16 votes had been received for the member suggested charities to receive a donation. Agreed approach was top two would get £2,000 and next six would get £1000 each. The results in no order are as follows – £2000 to Maggies Fife & Dunfermline Foodbank £1000 to Dunfermline Mens Shed, Shiresmill Therapy RC, Friends of Pittencrieff Park, Pancreatic Cancer, Talk Matters, Rotary Foundation, Motor Neurone Disease, Samaritans This is in addition to the 25% share of profit rounded up to nearest £100 given to Inner Wheel. Graham Steedman publicized Ralph’s swansong event, the upcoming Garden Party at the Garvock House Hotel. He and Andrew Watson are looking for more attendees, needing another 20 names. There are some people who have not responded, so ask is, if you are unable to attend, please also let him and Andrew know. Also, if you can attend, please try and sell the event to your non Rotary friends. While the event is not regarded as a fund raiser, they are looking for tombola prizes, which is always fun, with tickets / prizes going fast! AOCB none Presentation Maya & Noah gave a talk. A rich and varied year for them – Establishing Safe Space, for supporting pupils with mental health challenges. Equalities Group established, who in turn were able to set up a prayer / reflection room. This was after identifying and considering the needs of other faith group pupils who had other commitments and events to celebrate. Meeting and sharing opinions with MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville. Taking part on the 950th anniversary of Dunfermline Abbey, where they met Princess Anne, took part on drama festival and were in attendance for the Kings visit. Senior Boys mental health assembly established to encourage more boys to speak out. Pertinent to Noah’s future plans, which is to study Phycology and Counselling at Strathclyde. Secretary Note Other schools in Dunfermline were invited, but we were not able to conclude. Team is looking to bring forward in the calendar the Head Girl / Boy presentations next year to just after the Easter break, therefore not interfering with exam time and being well away from end of school year events. VOT Was delivered by Alan Mitchell, who decided not to probe if Noah’s loss of voice was due to over exuberance at the end of year prom at Balbirnie. He also complimented them on their talk and handling questions from the floor, operating well outside their comfort zone which can only be a good self-development activity. Great to see young people focus on supporting others, much like Rotary! As Alan said as his closing line, they have in their year as Head Boy and Girl, met a Princess, a King, and to conclude their year, they have dined with a President!

SV President Alan welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, especially our speakers David Brown and Kateryna (who’s surname I did not get as I forgot to swipe our SVP’s notes!), along with Ian Grieve from West Fife. TFTD Ian Morris provided TFTD, covering Boris resigning, Nicola on the rack, so politicians of all flavours keep giving. He then moved onto Trump’s charges and a “square go” with Biden. Ian of course had to mention his recent return from holiday in Greece ?? Business Matters SV President Alan reported on his recent attendance at the District Conference. Other clubs presenting on fund raising and causes supported, that gave him lots of new ideas. Speaker in the afternoon was creative director now working on Rotary marketing. Alan also reminded all of Club Assembly next week, so appropriate council members for 2023/24 asked to come prepared with their plans. Andrew Watson reminded everyone of the upcoming Garden Party. Please pay for tickets tagging payment with your name and Garden to help David spot bank transfers. Also, all reminded to sell to your friends, as not to late. Still looking for tombola and raffle prizes. AOCB John Haxton raised a comment on lack of tablet this week and if SVP’s future plans include accommodating this? Presentation Kateryna, with David Brown’s help, talked through her experiences both fleeing Ukraine and her time in Scotland. David is a Ukrainian host in Crossford, where Kateryna and her family were moved to in January after spending some time on the cruise ship based at Leith. She had visited Scotland 20 years ago, so not all new to her. Leaving Odesa involved herself and her daughters putting as much as possible into a car and driving 3000km / 2000m to Scotland. In Ukraine Kateryna was a qualified Lawyer, holding also a PHD. She worked for many large companies as their company lawyer. While in Scotland her focus has been on English language skills where she has a goal to be as fluent as possible. Her children have settled in Crossford and recently won a Scottish Poem event at Crossford PS, with Next Stop Kirkcaldy. Now Kateryna is in Crossford, she no longer feels like a refugee and regards Crossford more like home and is starting to work through the challenges of finding a job. She is also looking at ways to volunteer and “give back” for the help and support received from the Scottish government and the people of Scotland. Kateryna is looking for ideas to start work and find accommodation, so if any Rotarian can help with options / suggestions, please reach out and we will put you in touch with Kateryna. << photographs to be shared when supplied >> VOT Briar Morgan gave VOT, highlighting Kateryna’s very good English and that she and her family are very welcome here. Admirable CV and experience, lawyer in shipping are skills the Scottish Government could do with!

President Ralph welcomed all to tonight's meeting, especially Assistant Governor Brian Mitchell, who is also the incoming President for West Fife. TFTDIan Morris provided TFTD, covering a wide sphere of topics - Wild Pig Johnstone (I Googled it, no luck), national sporting events with England losing the first test and Scotland's win against Georgia on Saturday. Deposits paid, only for the two "agreed" deciding to drop out. The 2 x £350 deposits are non-refundable, so David looked for a possible student who does not have an associated Rotary Club. Ian will be involved with the Carnegie Trust Dinner next year and will be watching for how Rotary can contribute.Social - Gordon Black was not in attendance but sent a report confirming the Christmas Lunch is booked already for 3rd December at GHH, and he hopes to schedule wine and whisky tastings, and a themed meal evening. Hopefully after a successful Garden Party at the weekend, this can be repeated in 2024
