Initial teething problems with Zoom opening, however, did not cause delay opening. Let's just say it's a work in progress.

Chairman Brian bid 27 members a very warm welcome, on the warmest day of the year so far, to the first weekly meeting of our 100th year.

Updates on coming years priorities from Chairman Brian - getting back to normal ASAP and meet face to face, getting our social aspect of membership moving again, sports / schools and international projects re-energised and of course celebrating our 100th year. Please make sure the key events are in your diary - Charter Dinner on 5th March & Summer Centenary Ball on 18th June.

A very complete and varied Programme is nearing completion, as best can be achieved while still living with restrictions. Watch out for final version. We hope to know come August when we can get back to Garvock House via upcoming meeting with Pamela at GHH. For those still not sure about face to face just yet, we are looking at meeting guidance from District and hybrid meeting approaches.

Ian Morris let everyone know about event on 22nd July where we are all going to Crazy Golf for some competitive fun. Dinner at Tony Macaroni's at 6:30pm, followed by 18 holes...... rules, “5 clubs maximum and no range finder”. It is important people respond to invite quickly to allow numbers to concluded for both venues booking - partners and friend's welcome.

David reported on foundation grant approval subject to supplying final details on work / costs / project to improve toilet facilities in Kenya, in partnership with local club who will manage on our behalf. Thank you David for your skilful coordination on another successful grant approval and international project.

Some suggested changes to format of Cherry Tree project for The Glen to what was presented to us. We are looking to try and keep scope and approach the same as agreed. It does however give some options for members to sponsor a tree, with plaque. We will also be running a competition for a name of this area of the Glen when planted, two formats, final name and funny name. I am sure our Chairman will come up with a suitable prize (a cherry pie maybe).

Capital Quach was run again and a 2 all draw was outcome, so as holders Dunfermline retained Quach. This despite one of the pairs being royally thumped, supposably by people in sombreros! A great win for our talented golfers. We think that is to date, 12 for Dunfermline to Edinburgh's 10.

Graham and his Fundraising team have a selection of interesting new ideas, some hatched via innovative and interesting brain storming sessions. The recipe book in partnership with Inner Wheel went down well, not so sure on one of the calendar formats. More to come,

Branding is coming, from updated plaque at Garvock house to new polo shirts.

Our treasurer reminded everyone annual membership fees are due as per email sent to everyone earlier this week. Thank you to the 34 who have already paid.

Break out rooms were successfully created for the first time by our new Secretary (assisted by Chairman Brian), much to his relief!

Still SVP Brian recorded that the 2nd Rotary Walk on Monday around Fordell and ending up at Louie Browns had been very successful. The next one will be in a few weeks and details will be forwarded by email. He reported that he and President Alan had judged the Dunfermline HS Young Philanthropic competition. The winners promoted the Happy Days charity from Cowdenbeath who receive the £3,000 grant from the Wood Foundation. The 3 runners up receiving £500 each from our club were Veterans Best Friends, Safe Space & Eats – I am not confident that I have noted that down accurately and am open to correction…
Treasurer David reported that Garvock Hotel had belatedly cashed our cheque from last December being their £400 gratuity from the Club for staff.
Still SVP Brian reported that he & President Alan had attended a District Zoom meeting on Monday to consider the return to face to face meetings and the likelihood of hybrid meetings where some members will attend such meetings virtually by Zoom. Brian has invited John and new Secretary John to check what is required by way of technical equipment and the Club approved modest expenditure if required so that we can easily achieve this to maximise engagement of all members in the safest way for all.
President Alan then reported at length on the end of his second and unique virtual year in the role of President. Alan has been delighted with the engagement of members by attending meetings in particular and the programme delivered to support that. Alan took time to highlight all of the Convenors and Office Bearers and thank them for their huge efforts albeit some roles had not been able to undertake vey much due to the constraints of the pandemic. The sting in the tail is that these Convenors are in post for a further year! Alan concluded by confirming that the membership is the Club and that it had been an honour and privilege to serve as President in the Cub’s 99th year. He wished President Brian and the Club all the very best for the important year ahead and in his final act awarded the Rotarian of the Year trophy to yours truly apparently based on this nonsense that you are daft enough to read if you have reached this part of the report!
President Brian started his year by very generously complimenting the Rotarian of the Year award winner before appropriately moving on to praise President Alan’s success in leading the Club to a very strong position as it enters its big birthday year. As Alan is past Scottish & UK Carting champ Brian used a motor racing analogy which went on as long as the Le Mans 24 hour race with many references to pit stops, tyre walls, oil slicks, not going off track, zooming away, chicanes, rumble strips, home straight, chequered flag & top of the podium etc…a fitting send off indeed for President Alan.
The first meeting of this Centenary Year is next week and is yet another Presidential Address. I really wouldn’t bother as we have all heard it before on may occasions…Seriously though Brian is aware of that and is likely to spice it up and to delegate! If nothing else come and join your fellow members in breakout rooms for friendship, fun and fellowship. Bill Spence has the difficult task of giving the vote of thanks!
This is my final report as my tenure as Secretary comes to an end after 4 years. Best wishes to John on taking over (and many thanks too for getting me off the hook…)

SVP Brian reported on the success of the Initial Walk by members from David Lyth’s home and thanked David & Helen for organising and their hospitality after. This week’s walk is around Fordell and Brian will issue an email with details.
President Alan sought and obtained approval of donations of £500 to each of Rotary Shoebox & End Polio Now and £2,000 to the Centenary Fund. The balances on the various a/cs heading in to the Centenary Year will be General £560, Hospitality £4,400, Charity £3,600, Special Events £1,800 and Centenary £20,000.
Sports Convenor Keith reported that the Capital Quaich on 29 June is proceeding and he will be emailing golfers shortly to secure the team.
Then we had Andy Croxford’s Vocational. This was preceded by evident mild to severe panic onscreen chez Croxford as Andy decided his laptop was not fit for purpose and therefore he would use wife Judith’s device instead. Fearing such an issue Andy had taken the wise precaution of emailing his powerpoint presentation to fellow partner Alan Mitchell in order that Alan might step in if required. As he started his presentation on Judith’s device rather than his own Andy realised he had no access to his presentation as this was on the other device. No matter he thought my contingency plan will now kick in. Members were then entertained to the sound of Andy calling out in vain for Alan to start screensharing the file only for him to discover that inexplicably Alan had left the meeting moments before. Omnishambles does not cover this sequence of events and a new term is required. Order was restored when Andy managed to email the file to me for me to then screenshare. Reflecting on that this morning I am not clear why if Andy was able to email the file to me he was not able to access it on his new device…. No matter Andy settled down from being off the scale wound up to just hyper and proceeded to canter through his life story entertaining us hugely along the way. Who knew that you could support 4 Scottish football teams? In the course of his presentation Alan Mitchell sheepishly rejoined the meeting complaining that his broadband signal had let him down. Oh to be a fly on the wall in TC Towers this morning! I had the pleasant duty of proposing the vote of thanks for Andy’s efforts for what members will consider a memorable event.

President Laura in turn thanked the Club for hosting them in a joint meeting, highlighted that Joan & David Fraser joined the meeting from their holiday destination, thanked the Club for their use of our Zoom a/c and after 75 years of very close co-operation between Clubs looked forward to that continuing.

John Haxton’s guest Bill Macdonald gave a tremendous magic show based on sleight of hand and psychology with much involvement of members which was greatly enjoyed. Report from Members of the Way Ahead Group which I summarise as follows:
On efforts in the last year John Sim reported on consultation undertaken, Graham on meeting changes agreed by members but still to take effect pending our return to Garvock, Alan Mitchell on success in attracting 6 new members, Sean on implementing Associate membership and securing Andrew as first Associate member and plans for Corporate membership and Ian on heavy involvement in programme events.
For the future SVP Brian very much wishes the Group to continue in order to implement the plans in place including meeting changes, consult and review on these , pursue new members with a focus on diversity, progress Associate & Corporate membership further and review PR/website/social media.
The group will continue with the existing membership for continuity and implementation of agreed plan being chaired by that year’s SVP refreshing membership with newer members of Club in particular next year.
Action points for the Way Ahead Group are:

Review meeting format & programme in light of consultation

Ian Morris gave a topical Thought for the Day for which he had clearly put in a lot of work.
Juniper Wine Café proprietor Douglas Williamson gave an entertaining and informative presentation on 4 wines. Reversing the order from the biblical story Douglas started with La Vie en Rose which he did his very best to diss all evening both in terms of the wine and drinking rose. We followed that with a very good, young and vibrant Gruner Veltliner from Austria and a San Giovese from Italy. I suspect that you either loved the red or did not. I was in the latter camp. Saving the best to last we enjoyed Vaparetto prosecco which was drier than most and an excellent choice by Douglas. The evening allowed Douglas to publicise the shop (formerly Reubens) Which opened in December 2019 ie months before lockdown began which has made it difficult to get established. Douglas recognised many members as regulars – you know who you are and hopes we will visit the café for food, coffee, wine and the 70 Scottish gins which they stock! He sells Whispering Angel for £19 to trendies!
Blair gave an excellent vote of thanks with a witty piece of one upmanship to Hugh and myself!

34 members attended the Club Assembly to hear Centenary President Elect Brian detail plans for the momentous year ahead. Brian has already emailed the list of Committee members and the draft Programme to members direct. The summary of what Brian presented is within his PowerPoint presentation which Brian crafted and wished to show off to members but was let down by his PC as he could not find it! Incoming secretary John rescued Brian by screensharing his copy of the file. Brian has already emailed the file out to members direct.
Other issues not covered in the presentation which will be addressed include signage outside the hotel, club polo shirts/jumpers, Paul Harris Fellows, a time capsule, sponsorship of trees in the Glen (price may be much lower than first indicated), signpost with distances to other clubs, competition to name the new boulevard of trees, manage return to Garvock, enhanced Directory this year and a Celebration Bookelt for the Charter with sponsorship,
John gave us another topical Thought for the Day although the final rhyme was well signposted when we heard the first part “..academic..”!
Gordon promoted next weeks Wine Tasting. To date 22 members have committed to buy wines for the night with most having paid. If you have not done so please do so before next Thursday so that we can pay Juniper Wine Café in full. They have the list of names and addresses for delivery before next Thursday. If time is marching on and you are concerned later next week you might phone them direct to check when to expect your delivery.
Alan Mitchell confirmed that Kids Out will not take place this summer as planned however the organising committee are active and looking at alternatives. More to follow.
Dave Somerville reported that The Young Photographer comp finals involved 2 pupils selected by us who did well but were not in the top 3. They have certificates. The website and social media apps have been updated with full details of the photographer/writer comps & the 3rd one I can’t remember. Music?
President Alan has spoken to Hamish’s wife Mary who has confirmed that it is hoped Hamish will move back to the Vic from hospital in Edinburgh having suffered bleeds to the brain and emergency ops. Hamish’s memory has been affected as a consequence of which his PC cannot be accessed as he cannot remember the password. Any thoughts on how to resolve this to Mary please.
President Alan also reported that he is to attend a Young Philanthropic comp at Dunfermline HS where the Wood Foundation offer a prize of £3-4,000 to the winning team for their proposed charity to support. The Club has provided complimentary funding in previous years of £3-500 to each runner up team to support their charities. Members approved similar support of £500 per team this year David Fraser confirming that funds are available.
CPE Brian reported that the new Area 8 Governor Libby Seath is trying to source someone to take over the running of the Gavel this year due to the organiser standing down. Volunteers to Brian who will pass on your details.
Alan Mitchell gave a text book witty vote of thanks comparing CPE Brian’s timing with that of our First Minister..

Topical Thought for the Day from John looking forward to receiving hugs again
President Alan reported on Alex Mill resigning from the Club and responding by thanking Alex for his excellent service
David Chalmers responded to Dave Somerville advancing David for the Rotarian of the Year award. David thanked Dave for thinking of him but feels that he would not wish to be considered for the award as he has previously been presented with it for his work as International & Foundation Convenor and latterly been honoured by being made a Paul Harris Fellow. It was clarified that the ROYA is wholly in the gift of the President that year.
Brian Steer (a Paul Harris Fellow) was invited by President Alan to remind/inform members of what being made a Fellow is all about. It had become clear that the Club’s record keeping in terms of maintaining a List of Fellows available to members is not what it should have been. Attached is an up to date Directory which highlight the members who are Paul Harris Fellows namely: David Chalmers, David Fraser, David Gemmell (you have a better chance if your parents called you David…), Angus Hogg, Keith McFarlane, Bill Spence, Brian Steer & Andrew Watson. President Alan amusingly recorded that Keith had not been made a Fellow by our Club but by a US Club for his golfing exploits in furthering International Relations! President Alan proposed that for the future a small committee of senior office bearers review future awards of this honour.
Sean gave an exciting report on the proposed legacy project for the Centenary celebration. At a meeting that day in Pittencrieff Park the proposal was formed to plant 100 mature flowering cherry trees on the crescent shaped path from below the Pavilion down to the bottom Glen gates. The cost per tree is about £175 resulting in a project cost of about £17,500. No members were observed to inhale deeply or shift uncomfortably in their seats at this cost and no objection was heard! It appeared that members were delighted with the scale and visual display of what is planned and the likelihood that if planted later this year the trees will flower next April – all within the Centenary Year. Post meeting discussion focussed on the possibility of seeking a sponsor for each tree as an enduring legacy for the sponsor.

Looking further ahead Ronnie pushed members to respond the invite to book up for the trip to Edinburgh on 19 August to the Tattoo or Festival. Please respond to Ronnie direct asap.
Matt Brown gave his Vocational presentation detailing his coastal connections born in Hull, early life in Anglesey and early married life in Dunoon. Matt enjoyed a lengthy career with IBM but has now branched out from that and has a new challenge. Matt was a Tabler in Dunoon then Dunfermline enjoying 14 trips to Sporting Weekends and many Chairman’s weekends abroad. Members were pleased to hear that despite being born in England he supports Scotland and has a soft spot for Wales too. I gave Matt a vote of thanks.
SVP Brian reported on the possibility of returning to Meetings at Garvock however the hotel are largely in the dark and do not expect any clarity until 10 June at the earliest. The aim to have President Alan’s valedictory in Garvock at the end of June if at all possible. Hybrid meetings are planned so that those not able to attend in person can join by Zoom.

Gin Tasting

I overlooked sending a Report on this fantastic event as I was out of the office the following day golfing then off for the May Bank Holiday. In truth however nothing I could say would better the memorable vote of thanks given by Graham to the principals namely President Alan for the pre-event organisation and Presenter Andrew Watson. No praise is too high for a fantastic evening enjoyed by members and guests and what an advert for the Club.

AGM

Held on Election Day and the anniversaries of Dave Somerville’s wedding 32 years ago and the liquidation of Rangers FC 10 years ago a political term best describes the evening OMNISHAMBLES! From the Secretary failing to issue Minutes of last year until 10 minutes after the AGM started to the President Elect turning up 20 minutes late and thinking he was early! Who will forget the President calling out Brian, Brian are you actually here? ???? Proper order finally ensued and matters were concluded swiftly and appropriately as per the Minutes which are drafted and will be issued shortly.

Following the AGM there was lively debate regarding the proposed budget for District. Brian and I as representatives to District were well informed of members views.

Ronnie reported that he is organising a field trip to the Tattoo in August more details to follow very soon.

I reported on the Wine Tasting Evening planned to attract new member and your guests on Thursday 27 May. Please see attached flyer (with grateful thanks to my son Ross) which you might circulate to all. Following the blue print established at the Gin Tasting each wine sampled will be followed by a breakout room (of ever increasing volubility and volume). The nature of wine ie volume and staying fresh after it is opened necessitates the sale of bottles rather than samples as with spirits. The cost is £40 for 4 bottles eloquently described, supplied and delivered by Douglas Williamson, owner of Juniper Wine Café as per the flyer. Now that our government allows us to socialise more this is the perfect way to enjoy with your partner, family and friends. Douglas advises that he will offer a discount for any subsequent sales. Please confirm by email to Gordon Black your booking and make payment to the Club general a/c. As ever your secretary was first to pay and did so last night.

SC (Schools Convenor) Dave reported on the judging of the Photo comp by PC (Programme Convenor) elect Ronnie, Writing comp by GQ (Gin Queen) Anne McFarlane and Art comp by John Sim’s daughter Hannah. The work submitted should be displayed on in a gallery on our website and on social media too by SC.
CP (Club President) Alan had the pleasure of inducting Jim Payne into DRC (or RCoD as others prefer!). IC (International Convenor) elect Sean introduced NM (New Member) Jim and the NM duly responded. Welcome Jim from us all.
CT (Club Treasurer) F (David Fraser ) reported on next week’s Gin Tasting and the scandal of the 4 caddies in the OCG (Organised Club Group) still to pay for the event. F was at pains to unmask the 4 caddies. Who is H? First to be unmasked was IM during a brief interrogation/interview or breakout group organised by the night’s H (overseer of the OCG) G (Graham Steedman). Folding like a cheap deck chair IM confessed his guilt and offered mitigation that he was paying online as he spoke. Subsequent to this interview and once the whole of the OCG was back in the room (after the unique 2nd quick breakout room) the second caddy was unmasked as the IC elect. Next G raised the possibility that he might be the third caddy but protested his innocence leaving members of the OCG uncertain. By the end of the meeting the identity of the fourth caddy was a cliff-hanger to members of the OCG. Subsequent to the meeting F was forensically cross-examined by the JVP of the OCG to try to identify the fourth caddy. To the amazement of those OCG members still in the room the JVP’s questioning unmasked the fourth caddy as the questioner himself. Suffice it to say F obtained payment from JVP immediately. Fifer G was continuing to be reluctant to part with any monies until realising that he was the last to pay duly did so. F retired for the evening satisfied at mission accomplished and the rotten apples in the barrel dealt with.
NM Neil Wilson gave his vocational describing his peripatetic childhood, promiscuous career leaving a black spot with his previous employers and fascinating personal life involving music, theatre, karate, training and practising as a hypnotherapist and service to the community. SVP Brian gave a warm vote of thanks for a tremendous presentation commenting that compared to Brian and his sporting prowess Neil had been a bit of a nerd…..
Next week is the gin tasting for which 119 tickets have been sold. I would be grateful if you might come online early say at 6.45pm and ensure that you and your guests have your first and second names on your Zoom screen to help me set up the breakout rooms. It should be a tremendous evening.

Next week is our 99th Charter Dinner and the first and hopefully last to take place virtually. President Alan intimated that he has no intention of wearing black tie in his own home so there is no dress code. The Toast to the Club will be presented by Blair Morgan and the Reply by Tom Sunter. Much to look forward to.

Treasurer David gave a comprehensive summary of the club and charity a/cs finances tailored in particular to assist newer members.
In essence the Clubs own funds total about £1,250 and £4,400 the latter sum being held in the hospitality a/c and is after deposits of £1,000 to Balmoral and £600 to Garvock Hotel have been paid for events next year.
In essence the Club’s Charity funds are spread over 3 bank a/cs with Clydesdale.
The first has about £5,600 of which £4,000 or thereby has been contributed by donations by members in lieu of their usual lunch spend for weekly meetings.
The second is the special events a/c which has £2,000. This is a float to pay up front costs for events eg GinFest.
The third is funds saved for Centenary year of 9 x £2,000 contributed over last 10 years ie £18,000 and agreed to be used for Charity spending only in Centenary year if not called upon for charity spending prior to that.
Discussion focussed on the fact that some members have donated throughout lockdown, some for part of that, some by lump sum or catching up and some not at all. Treasurer David is the only member who knows who has donated and how much. It was stressed that this an utterly voluntary matter for each member. It was also clear that the donations made have allowed the Club to continue to support various charities at a very high level and particularly in comparison with other clubs.
David highlighted the very significant boost to funds raised provided by Gift Aid. Most members have signed a declaration that they wish to opt in to Gift Aid. Might it be the case that members yet to do so have allowed this due to omission or error rather than having a principled or real objection? David is to write to members yet to complete a declaration to invite them to consider that they might now do so to provide a further significant boost to our charity funds ie and additional 25% of the sum gifted. If a declaration is now completed it is understood that this may be applied retrospectively for up to 4 years.
David will also write to new members in respect of apportioned annual subscriptions (currently £95) from the month after they joined.
International and Foundation Convenor David gave a summary of work undertaken. There have been 10 international projects over the last 11 years all with grant funding totalling about £25,000 from Rotary Foundation. Our club has contributed about £11,500 to these projects and other clubs about £3,500 being total spending on projects of about £40,000 in that period. As rough guide the Club has benefitted from grants totalling over $100,000 over our 99 year lifetime. Discussion focussed on the donations which the Club makes to Foundation. District see our high level of donations to charity and think that we pay about a third of what RI suggests is appropriate of $100 per member and about a half of the average of Club’s in District. There is no transparency on these figures to allow us to check.
Discussion followed on further donations now. President Alan proposed the Samaritans, Salvation Army, Talk Matters and Andy’s Man Club. Further proposals of Fife Women’s Aid (from David Gemmell) and Marie Curie (from Russell having received tremendous assistance from them with Moira’s care). Members agreed to donate £500 to each and £100 to Peacocks in the Glen.
Publicity Convener David will seek the appropriate article in the Press and put up on Facebook to highlight the latest round but also the excellent level achieved in the last year.

The meeting on 29th April is the Gin Tasting presented by Andrew Watson. Tickets are selling like hotcakes therefore please liaise with President Alan re your tickets without delay.

Treasurer David confirmed that the whisky tasting very well organised by Dave Walker raised a tremendous £280 for the charity fund. I forgot to mention last week that Ronnie won the bottle of whisky in the raffle.
Andrew Watson eloquently promoted the Gin Tasting on 29th April. Please see the flyer below. This has been planned as the second of three events to invite potential new members to attend our meetings and given the gender imbalance in our membership particularly to attract new female members. The first of these meetings is on 8th April ie in 3 weeks’ time and is a presentation by Jilly McCord. Pease see the flyer below for that too. For both of these events it is hoped that not only will potential new members attend but also further great attendances of members, members partners and guests. President Alan and Jackie are in the process of decanting 4 gin samples per person for 92 attendees into sample size jars! We can buy further bottles and have more joining the meeting if required. SVP Brian gave a comprehensive and detailed presentation of the history of his old school Dunfermline High, its various attempts at expansion, demolition and tremendous rebuild in which Brian played a very central role. Members had joined in the spirit and provided Brian with old school photos from the 50s, 60s & 70s. Brian was rewarded with an excellent vote of thanks from John Haxton wearing his old school cap and ties and quoting much Latin.
Next weeks meeting is a general discussion on fundraising, Foundation and charitable donations.

A thoroughly disappointing and dispiriting evening - No new members inducted, no guests.

Dave Walker had supplied us in advance with 4 whiskies to sample and answer questions on. The pressure was on to identify the less potent shop bought bottle. Dave and his glamorous assistant Anouska prepared a great quiz via screenshare.

Gerry gave a tremendously warm and witty vote of thanks for an excellent effort by Dave which we all enjoyed.

SVP Brian spoke at length and with a lack of positivity of his recent engagement in an Area Zoom meeting at which President Alan also joined and gave a firm presentation of the Club’s views!
International Convenor David and his Vice Sean gave an excellent presentation on the Club’s project on reuniting families in Kenya. David Gemmell gave the vote of thanks.
President Alan gave thanks on behalf of Russell to members for their support and who had joined Moira’s funeral virtually.

I announced that Kingdom Cocktails are giving a presentation in 2 weeks’ time. I have forwarded a separate email to you dedicated to that and also issued promptly links to our next 2 meetings. I hope that this does not cause confusion! I have put Kingdom Cocktails in the Heading for the 2nd of the two meetings and also the date in each. * Sean reported on a presentation which he and Jack joined from Crieff RC re a £10,000 project to build a Corn Mill in Malawi. A District grant is being sought but the outcome will not be known until the autumn. Decision was to await the outcome of grant application and decide at that stage.
* Ronnie highlighted the plans for the Burns Night Next week which Ian has emailed you incessantly on. The Way Ahead Group (WAGS/Young Turks) are pushing ahead with seeking to attract new members and this event is being pushed as an excellent sample meeting for targets to try. On that basis another tremendous turnout of members is asked for to present the Club in its best light to guests attending of which it is hoped there will be a good many. Bribes usually amounted to small cash amounts, coffee or most often liberty from custody rather than being kept in for Court the next day. Interestingly Brian recommends the Covid vaccine developed by Pfizer as according to Brian that Viagra stuff is really effective so their vaccine must be good too with that pedigree. Senior VP gave a comprehensive and fulsome vote of thanks with no detail omitted.

* Dave Somerville confirmed that COVID restrictions results in all school competitions including the primary school quiz being deferred.
* David Fraser confirmed that OSCR has approved our most recent a/cs submitted. Members thanked David for his efforts. Discussion followed on members voluntary contributions which have been paid thus far to Foodbank totalling about £12,000. As Foodbank are to receive grants and support from Aldi and Amazon and are likely to open a 3rd warehouse to cope the destination of further contributions is being considered. David will revert with a proposal.
* Ian Morris is organising the Burns Night celebration as a programme event by Zoom on 21st January with a “plethora of stars” Messrs Condie, Croxford, McFarlane, Wardell & new member Ian Wilson fighting for top billing. STOP PRESS Willie Allan is now confirmed to give a Toast to the Lassies. Please support your fellow members with top attendance. You are invited to have whisky at the ready to toast the haggis after Ian Wilson’s address followed by haggis to consume (Ian Morris recommends the microwaveable variety). The performers will be suitably attired and you may wish to do so too – certainly the parts that we can see on screen. Partners and family etc are very welcome to attend to. * After the SGM President Elect Brian praised Noel and Alan for their remarkable job in steering the Club through this COVID period. He thanks Tom and Brian for their work on our programme. He spoke "concisely" on his aims for his year primarily to celebrate the Club's achievements in our Centenary Year and lay the foundations for the Second Century. He does not plan to change many things (so he says) but to relaunch the Club coming out of the pandemic lockdown measures and rebuild community involvement. Brian's attempts at screensharing failed spectacularly therefore he will be tutored on this urgently - Can and must do better! He reeled off lists of convenors and committee memberships but has followed that up by email to members.

* Bill Spence reported that Brian Dean is now comfortably settled in his home.
* Keith reported on the previous evening Zoom Gavel Quiz in which 16 clubs participated in 5 rounds of questions. Our excellent team of 6 were first runners up however that was not enough to get through to the next round.
* President Alan had attended Carnegie Hall on World Polio Day Saturday 24th March for the big switch on for the it to be lit up in purple.
* Cupar RC President Roy Marsden gave an engaging presentation on Scottish place names and received an excellent vote of thanks from Dave Walker.

* Fundraising Convenor Graham explored the appetite for an online auction. He was encouraged by responses and will liaise with members who have experience of these from other organisations.
* Keith reported on last Sundays well attended Isaac Sclar golf competition. Graham was third, Keith second and myself first. This comp was started by Isaac Sclar in 1949!
* Keith will coordinate Poppy Scotland collections with Dave Somerville and the Lyths.
* Sean and Ronnie reaffirmed that Shoeboxes can be collected from and returned to their home and office respectively.
* SVP Brian reported on a meeting of all the local clubs which he attended with the President. Cowdenbeath are inspired by Cork where 20,000 messages at £5 each were sold for families to message their departed loved ones, be blessed and all hung on a tree and propose something similar locally but involving them selling this on our patch at the Kingsgate. Consensus was this is a nonstarter this year but might be explored for next year albeit there are many practical issues which they had not appreciated far less addressed!
* Bill Spence gave a delightful presentation with admirable photos of the period of his career in Computing which began in the age of the Steam Train. Bill variously worked for the Taxman, the Church of England and a ready mix concrete company where Bill's new systems highlighted the frauds which had been taking place. The number of questions highlighted how much members were engaged with Bill's talk. Graham gave a vote of thanks praising Bill for pulling it off. Hopefully other senior members will be inspired by Bill to offer "vocational" type talks on Zoom so we can enjoy tales from the past as most members will not have been members and therefore heard the vocational from the senior guys.

* After the meeting the GinFest committee met with the President and SVP to consider dates for the next event. It was unanimously agreed that the full blown event as was arranged in the inaugural year cannot take place in May 2021 nor later in the year on the September to November dates offered all for a number of reasons including issues with social distancing, economy, sponsorship, ticket sales and proximity to the real target. The real target is a full blown event in May 2022 ie as our Centenary year nears its climax. In the Spring or early summer we will look again at whether it is viable and desirable to try to hold a scaled down version in some way later next year.

* Apologies for failing to report on last week's excellent Business meeting which was joined by 30 plus members and involved lively and healthy debate. Convenors reported on their plans in this unique and difficult year. Busiest is Sports Convenor Keith who, flushed by the success of the Couples Golf won by Mike and Helen (2 years in a row!) Doran with Mikes Hole in One resulting in better inward half pipping Carole Pook and yours truly, confirmed an excellent entry of 14/15 for the Sclar on Sunday coming, Gavel by Zoom first round on 28th October (date in diaries please) details to follow and hopes of Charity Golf Day in April as possibly first fundraiser of 2021 for Club. Social Convenor Gordon confirmed October wine tasting is off, Christmas Lunch decision will be taken next month and Charter Dinner (February) and Garden Party (June) are all under review. Whisky and wine tasting events will be arranged next year if possible. Fundraising Convenor Graham can organise hee-haw for fundraising due to COVID unless anyone has any inspiration for a new approach in this virtual/electronic age. RIBI will not allow Rotary events for the rest of this year. There will be no insurance cover. Collecting cash is problematic in this new age contactless payments rather than cash. Youth & Schools Convenor Dave is waiting to see what might be able to proceed next year. International Convenor David is continuing with plans for the Centenary year in particular. Programme Convenor Tom confirmed that weekly meetings is the clear message from members. Speakers from within are preferred (a) because they are excellent and (b) because they do not involve an overt or inferred approach for a donation. Treasurer David confirmed that if existing commitments made are maintained we have a little over £2,000 of funds in the Charity a/c remaining thereafter still to donate. As fundraising will be difficult consideration will require to be given at some point to accessing earlier than planned the other £18,000 of charity funds which had been earmarked to donate in the Centenary year which starts next July.

* Rachel McDonald from the local Toastmasters Club gave a presentation on her Club where she is Vice President and the links between our two organisations where we can tap into their advocacy and leadership training and expertise. * Dave Somerville then dropped a bomb when reporting on his recent discussions with other clubs and the issue of what we call ourselves eg our "proper" name is Rotary Club of Dunfermline but others use Dunfermline Rotary Club viewing it as more modern. President Alan skilfully knocked this issue on to the business meeting on 1st October.

* Keith reported on the Capital Quaich Golf Challenge against our mother club Edinburgh which took place on Wednesday at Pitfirrane being the 25th match. We triumphed 4 - 0 in the match whitewashing our opponents and going ahead 11 - 10 in the series despite the dreadful weather.
* Keith highlighted the Couples Golf/Fish Tea takes place on Sunday 27th September and the Sclar 2 weeks later on 11th October.
* Pushp Vaid from Westhill Aberdeen gave an engrossing talk on his Chinook helicopter crashed into the sea 3 miles from Sumburgh Airport, Shetland in 1986 killed 44 passengers on board and his co-pilot. One other passenger a 20 year old lad new to the off-shore industry also survived but has not flown helicopters since. Pushp immediately had my attention when he mentioned that he started flying helicopters in the Indian Army before I was born! Having gone on to fly for another 20 years after retirement he appears to be living a very active retirement as he has a repertoire of 9 talks which he can give (and he is keen to do so) including the option of an interactive Indian cooking demonstration by Zoom. My suggestion is that we invite him back to a meeting whereby we organise ourselves into sub-groups of three members and partners (as allowed by President Nicola) meeting at one couple's home for the members to take an active part and cook a meal as directed by Pushp for the partners who might sit back, watch online too and glug alcohol whilst we do so. * David Chalmers confirmed that our project in Kenya to reunite children in orphanages with their families appears to be well organised and is due to start this week. More news on this in due course.

* Speaker John Miles gave a comprehensive presentation on the amazing success of Global Sight Solutions who have provided over 100 eye hospitals in Asia and aim to take this up to 150. Originally called Leatherhead Rotary Eye Project the name was changed as it was a distraction as potential supporters either asked about Leatherhead or about what was involved with Rotary (our research highlighted a similar issue of lack of awareness). John spoke entertainingly and modestly about his club's project seeking any support which might be forthcoming which is then increased five fold by contributions from District, National & International. Tom Sunter gave a concise and warm vote of thanks.

* Much discussion re charity funds and donations. Treasurer David confirmed that whilst there is £15,000 or thereby in the Charity a/c most of that is already committed to local charities in terms of the previous donations agreed to be made monthly after which there will be between £2-2,500 remaining. Fundraising at this time is plainly very difficult therefore the Trustees plan to meet to make a recommendation to members on how and to what extent the Centenary Charity funds of £18,000 be used in advance of the Centenary as a rebalancing of the charity funds between now and then. David concluded that the Club has been very generous in its support for charities thus far. District seeks donation from clubs to support Rotary in Beirut following the recent disaster. District is contributing £1,000. Members supported unanimously President Alan's recommendation as reported by Brian to donate £250.
* Keith reported on his recent phone call with Alistair Brown and is pleased to note that other members are in touch with him too. Keith's sports committee plans to hold the annual Partner's Golf event at Pitfirrane on Sunday 27th September where Helen Doran (and Ronnie Pook) will be defending champs. This is very much a fun event for very amateur golfing pairs to compete over the improved 9 hole course followed by food in the clubhouse probably sitting in groups of 4 ie who you have played with. On what other occasion do you and your partner get to play around with a new partner?

* Social committee convenor Gordon expects to persuade husband of Inner Wheel President, Jim Craig to entertain in song at the Christmas Lunch. Jim fell of his seat on hearing this and was not heard to say no.

* President Alan lamented that the recent media reporting of the attempts to eradicate polio referenced the likes of Bill Gates but omitted and mention of Rotary's central role.
* SVP Brian reported in detail on the Centenary Committees substantial work investigating options for holding the 100th Charter Dinner. The committee unanimously recommended that the Dinner take place at the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh at a cost to members of £75 pp including meal, drinks and transport. Members unanimously accepted this recommendation. The committee also plans a themed Summer Ball ( The Roaring Twenties - No prohibition!) at Garvock Hotel in June 2022 to close the anniversary year which members accepted. Brian thanked his committee of "ex-presidents" for their efforts.
* David Walker, John Sim and I spoke on the work of the Rotary Future (Young Turks) committee and in support of the substantial proposals brought to members (as recommended by Council) for the approval of members. At the outset I highlighted that if accepted the meal cost (including an April 2020 annual increase) would increase to £15.50. This is in line with the cost charged to Inner Wheel for their meetings and is due to the later start time proposed overlapping with restaurant service requiring the hotel to bring in additional staff. A number of members asked questions and commented on the proposals before they were put to members for approval. In the event members unanimously approved the following changes:

* To hold all future meetings of the club in the evenings with a start time of 19:00 for a 19:15 meal at Garvock save with flexibility for a handful of meetings annually to take a different format or at a different location. Events such as the quiz or wine tasting would merit a change to a Friday rather than Thursday evening. Meetings will commence with a "Thought for the Day" in place of grace and the Loyal Toast will be reserved for formal occasions only. If there is a demand for it Zoom meetings in lieu of Garvock meetings might be arranged on an ad-hoc basis.
* The detailed terms of Associate membership were also approved.
* I thanked my fellow committee members for their substantial efforts to date and club members for their engagement on the issues being considered and their support for modernisation and progress but stressed that the committee considers that there is substantial work still to do. The meeting changes will not take effect until we return to the hotel. A former Tabler Matt Brown has intimated that he will join as a full member at that point which is a great start. Associate membership now needs to be pushed out to potential members. A new category of corporate membership is still being investigated and planned and the issue of getting our message out there particularly via social media is being addressed to counter the surprising feedback we received that people do not know what we do and how we operate.
* President Alan advised that he intends to try out a new approach to Council whereby the meetings of Council will be held as meetings of the Club every 6 weeks. The response to this change will be monitored.

* SVP Brian chaired the meeting in Alan's absence. He reminded members that NEXT WEEK IS THE BIGGIE?MUST ATTEND MEETING. This is to vote on proposals to modernise as recommended by Council. I will intimate full details shortly and in good time before next week's meeting so members are clear what is proposed.
* Brian intimated that Council recently agreed to transfer about £1,700 from the General to the Hospitality Fund to bring the Hospitality Fund total up to £6,000 to support the Centenary plans. I hope to finalise Council Minutes and intimate these early next week.
* Brian intimated that Dr Janet Lowe, secretary of the Carnegie Club has agreed to be the new Area 8 Area Governor and that she looks forward to working with us..
* Brian reported that Craig Smith ex-Chairman of Dunfermline Round Table is involved in starting a Dunfermline Children's Clothing Bank Charity and seeks support and funding. He suggested that this is an excellent idea, very necessary and deserving of backing from the Club but that we would wait to hear what funding they receive from the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust and Stevens whom they have approached too.
* Brian reported that at next week's meeting he will table details and proposals on behalf of the Centenary Committee he chairs for the 100th Charter Dinner and proposed Summer Ball for members to begin consideration of.
* Sports Convenor Keith reported that the golf match against Edinburgh RC is arranged for early September at Pitfirrane. 3 other members there are needed to assist with the booking. Keith will email members direct to seek players etc.
* Graham sought and obtained approval to repair a gazebo donated by Dunfermline Delivers at a cost of about £70.

We were joined by Lynda Mayes who was originally from Dunfermline and is now a member of Bowmanville Ontario Rotary Club. Lynda was first introduced to Rotary after a chance meeting with Jack Pryde of West Fife Club when, during a visit home she met Jack who, then contacted a Rotary Club close to her home in Canada.

The Bowmanville Ontario Club have had to cancel most of their fundraising but we were intrigued to learn of a Ribs and Brew Festival the club hold annually. The event attract 80,000 paying customers and earns the club $130,000!!!!

Lynda also spoke of an event, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes which supports abused women. Local men dress up as "ladies" and walk down Main Street, David Somerville suggested this would not be a new experience for some of our members!

Graham Steedman managed the meeting exceptionally well and after the breakout rooms also returned everyone back to the general meeting.

* A meeting with no Agenda was skilfully spun out by President Alan to a wide ranging discussion on Club matters for over 20 minutes. Highlights include Council meeting next Tuesday the purpose of which includes considering proposals from the Future of the Club Committee. President Alan invites comments etc from members still to do so in advance of that meeting so that your views may be considered by Council. If there is a Council recommendation that will be brought to the Club at the Zoom meeting on 13th August for a decision. Please try to ensure that you join this meeting on the 13th!
* Keith reported that former member the Rev Colin McPherson has passed away. He is in the photo of members taken to mark the Club's 50th anniversary as is current member Peter Crabb!
* Much discussion on donations. David Lyth reported on the Vine Church who have been providing 100 free meals per day, 7 days per week to adults and children but are now scaling back to 4 days per week. One 85 year old man was especially delighted to receive his deliveries as the deliverer is the only person that he speaks to each day. Our donation was much appreciated by them. Our previously approved regular donations are ongoing. David Fraser confirmed that all cheques have been cashed and letters of thanks received from recipients. Foodbank are receiving great support from many sources at this time but fear the worst time will be October/November. Members donations (in lieu of Garvock meal costs) and gift aid on these donations are providing £1,200 per month plus to Foodbank - a tremendous effort. All agreed that support for Foodbank is appropriate on an ongoing basis as long as members continue to contribute. David Somerville reported concerns from Foodbank that there controls on who receives support and how often may not have been what they should be during the pandemic in particular due to their volunteers not being able to go to work. At the upcoming Council meeting future donations will be considered.

* I have no idea what is happening next week but will try to find out and give some advance notice!
Another mea culpa from me. At the end of the meeting a number of people can stay in the meeting to continue chatting after our meeting ends. I usually do but did not do so last night as I had yet to eat and the sun was shining.... I had an option of Leave Meeting or End Meeting for All. I clicked Leave Meeting and was then give the option to assign someone else as host. I did that thinking that would allow the meeting to continue. I learned shortly afterwards that the meeting for all ended abruptly. Apart from anything else I now realise that the person I quickly picked on to assign them as host had no idea I did so and may very well have left the meeting themselves. Apologies. Zoom is an ongoing learning curve which just took a downward dip.

President Alan reported on his meetings with the Presidents of the WF, Carnegie and Forth Bridges Clubs. He noted that Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay had not been invited which he is keen to resolve for the future.
I gave a presentation on behalf of the 10 strong committee of self-styled Young Turks of the club on our work so far in reviewing the future of the Club in light of the pandemic and the start of our second century. In doing so I highlighted that we had undertaken much research with prospective members to try to understand why they have not yet been bowled over by the honour of being asked to join such a wonderful and prestigious club such as ours. Their responses highlighted common themes of not knowing what we do, perceiving us to be old men having lunch time meetings only which modern working people simply cannot get to, having many other commitments which compete such as work, family and other interests eg scout or sport and being concerned at being asked to take on great commitments at an early stage of joining. A mea culpa from me however for forgetting to highlight that the lack of gender and ethnic diversity in our membership is an urgent issue sought to be addressed too.
Lengthy breakout room meetings followed with much discussion flowing from the evening's subject matter all of which feedback was greatly appreciated.
Tom Sunter graciously gave an impromptu vote of thanks for the presentation.

Whilst the hotel appear to have considered and addressed the many refinements and alterations required to allow us to return safely they are also very happy to hear from us if we have any issues or consider that arrangements might be improved in any way. We await further information from the hotel as to a possible return but it appears that may be September at the earliest. Members were reassured by Alan's report.

5. John Sim gave an excellent talk, using only two powerpoint slides, on his early life in the Garden City of Rosyth in the 1960s and 1970s. He progressed from Park Road PS, via Inverkeithing HS to Dunfermline HS which he left after S4 to work on Chamberfield Farm.
He moved on from the pig farm to the mail room and print room at Brodies Lawyers and to the Bank of Scotland at Pitreavie. He saw an opening at 22yrs old to move into Computer Support and Operations Support and, as they say, the rest is history!
He has worked at IBM, HBOS, Lloyds and TSB (with several lucrative external contracts) and is now a Project Manager. The boy has done good!
He is an avid collector of Dinky Cars, particularly MGBGTs, is a keen sailor with a boat at Kip Marina, a mine of information about the Clyde Puffers (eg Vital Spark), a cyclist, whisky connoisseur and a PARS supporter!
Next June he will be 25yrs married to Jane and has two daughters (Holly aged 22 who is studying for an Art Degree and Amy aged 17 who is currently in S6 at Woodmill HS and is planning to study English & Film) and a Jack Russell named Toby!
John is proud to be a Rotarian!

2. President Noel welcomed all present and passed on the sympathies of all Club members to Ralph and his family on his mother's passing last weekend
3. John Anderson gave an appropriate poetic introduction related to Zoom, being in own rooms and hoping to return to Garvock for meals in the future!
4. The competition for the best background was won by Hugh Short who was in outer space orbiting the earth……..as most lawyers are!
Tom Sunter was a close second with his escape from an iceberg.
Many members were distracted by Ralph's selection of background videos, not because of Celtic convincingly beating Inter Milan, Rangers and Hearts, but due to Meg Ryan's "performance" in When Harry Met Sally!!!
5. President Noel then gave several updates including:-
a. Margaret Dean, on behalf of Brian Dean, is delighted to accept being an Honorary Member of Rotary.
b. At our Zoom Meeting next week (Thursday 28th May at 7pm), John Sim has "volunteered" to give his Vocational Talk
c. There is a Rotary District Assembly on Zoom this Saturday to which all are invited. Link is on their website.
d. Pip Yeates has arranged a guest speaker in June/July. He is Dr John MacLean, Chief Executive of the Hampden Sports Clinic who has worked with sportsmen and sportswomen for over 30 years. He has had a major role in the daily Covid-19 Joint Response Group Meetings and has a particular interest in the life-changing impact of Covid-19. Details to follow.
6. Members split up into several separate discussion/fellowship groups for wide-ranging intellectual discussions….. needless to say, including managing golf after lockdown!!
7. Some members then gave further information/updates including:-
a. David Lyth thanked Ralph re his recommendation on watching episodes of "Together" on the RIBI Webcast
b. Keith McFarlane commented that The Capital's Golf Challenge v Rotary Club of Edinburgh may still go ahead on Monday 29th June, depending upon the restrictions at that time. In addition, the RC of St Andrews is also proceeding at present with their plans for their charity day at Kingsbarns on Monday 26th October. Last year we were represented by Ralph, Ronnie, Mike and Pip who will be given the first option. Up to six can enter per club. Contact Keith if interested.
c. David Fraser gave an update regarding our recent charitable donations. Four of the five recipients have received and acknowledged receipt giving their thanks and some details on how the money will be used. This information is being passed to David Somerville for publicity purposes. No feedback has been received from Women's Aid and their initial cheque has not been cashed. There was full agreement to withhold further payments at present.
8. In his closing comments, President Noel asked for urgent suggestions from all members regarding other local charities which we could support at these times and for any suggestions for speakers to be sent to Brian Steer.
9. The meeting concluded with the toast to Rotary the World Over.

There were an excellent 37 members who joined us including one or two who had not managed the week before.
Hopefully we are all now a bit more clued up on using the buttons in Zoom.
Several of us had virtual backgrounds which catch the eye. Next week there is a competition to see who has the best/most interesting virtual background. I have put detail below how to achieve this.
The Council invites members to nominate charities we might consider donating too at this time. There must be more options than ever at present.
Noel envisages at this stage the Club committing to at least another £10,000 of expenditure by the end of his term.
The breakout rooms appeared to be a success allowing all members to participate in smaller groups of 5 or 6 for fellowship.
FEEDBACK on these virtual meetings is vital. That is another word for constructive criticism. Please let either Noel or myself know if you have any comment on the length of meetings, timing, frequency, content, breakout rooms, technical aspects etc. David Lyth had used breakout rooms therefore we have embraced his suggestion. Can you recommend any other approach eg quiz or presentation or the like?

Members agreed to donate to Women’s Aid 3 monthly payments of £500. Mike Williams, David Walker & Alan Mitchell raised the issue of cheques possibly being stuck in offices which are closed. David Fraser will check but advised online banking requires (by OSCR) 2 signatures which is awkward.

Members are invited to advance proposals for next wave of donations in June focused on local charities.

Meetings Members agreed to weekly meetings on Thursday at 7pm by Zoom. I will issue an email invitation to all once again. Essential meetings which will take place virtually are the AGM on 14th May and the Club Assembly on the 4th June. President Noel invited suggestions for speakers to give their presentation virtually and no doubt to the surprise of John Sim suggested that he might give his vocation. A stellar Quiz is a certainty. David Lyth has raised that his experience of breakout meetings of smaller groups to facilitate chat and banter. Council have considered this subsequently and are delighted to try this at our next meeting on Thursday. In effect we will break into smaller groups of 6-8 so that we can all come off mute in these groups and chat normally as we would whilst dining at Garvock.

Overall the meeting appeared to be successful for a first attempt. Hopefully everyone who had wished to contribute had their opportunity. Muting everyone save the President and the person that he has invited to speak appears a necessity to avoid order but also to cancel background noise and echoing voices. Several members have emailed me subsequent to the meeting with their feedback which will be taken on board. Feedback at all times is encouraged.

Dunfermline Foodbank (Member donations to RCD - I shall claim Gift Aid on these but have included this extra amount from our Charity Fund PLUS Monthly Prize Money from 50/50 draw) April £920, May £1258.75, (June £540). Our current membership is 44 + 7 Hon. Members (incl. Brian Dean) - 24 members have donated to date.

Other Donations Agreed (and first monthly cheques sent): Salvation Army £1000 monthly for three months, Samaritans £500 monthly for three months, Fife Gingerbread £500 monthly for three months, Fife Women’s Aid £500 (meeting agreed to extend this also to three months), Stag Laser Craft (Dalgety Bay) £500 - to date they have manufactured and distributed 2500 face-shields to NHS Fife, Fife Council Care Homes, and Fife General Practices).

In addition to the above President Noel requested suggestions be sent to him for any suitable recipients of grants at the end of the current Presidential year.

Testy Ian is pressing for members to support the Wine Tasting on Friday 20th March. 30 members have yet to confirm to Ian whether they can attend or not. He is waiting for your response.
Tom has been appointed by SVP Alan as his Programme Convenor and sought and obtained approval from members to change the meeting arrangements from 1st July. After that date the 1st & 3rd Thursdays will be lunchtime and the 2nd & 4th will be evening meetings. That is the reverse of the present arrangement. The 5th Thursday has been delegated to Bill to arrange “social” or different events on these 4 evenings. Bill have confirmed that armed with that task these may very well become Friday evenings instead. He seeks suggestions for what we may wish to do. Next term that is July, October, December & April. Members also approved a non-political meeting next term on the issues around Scottish Independence with 2 speakers each advocating for and against followed by a discussion with members encouraged to share views.
I confirmed GinFest dates 8th & 9th May with planning heavily underway last year’s committee being improved with the additions of Ian Morris, Dave Somerville & John Sim.

Brian confirmed Young Writer and Young Photographer entries are now being judged. We were represented at the District Young Vocalist Comp by Olivia Beattie Form IV Dunfermline HS and she was excellent and a great Ambassador. The winner from Dundee RC was Toluwani Idowu and he is spectacular. Remember his name. Interviews for RYLA identified a boy and girl from DHS. The boy failed to commit therefore Sarah Cromwell is our sole nomination.
Please see the circulated confidential proposal from Brian in respect of reallocating the schools attached to each local club due to an obvious imbalance. This should be kept confidential. Brian seeks your views so please respond to him by email.

Rivalling Brian Ian Morris gave a lengthy report…

Ian and Tom Arnott are organising the Wine Tasting on Friday 20th March at Pitfirrane GC 7 for 7.30pm. The cost is £20pp which covers tasting 8 wines and anti-pasti sharing platters and cheeseboard. The previous caterers at Pitfirrane GC were sacked and are long gone. The catering will be top notch and Tom, Ian and the golf club guarantee this.
Numbers are strictly limited to only 90 so contact Ian right away to ensure you secure your tickets. Donations of bottles for the raffle are invited eg Xmas gifts which did not impress! The profit will be donated to Cancer Research which the returning wine expert Joe Williamson supports.

I advised that the annual challenge against Round Table has been set for Thursday 27th February at which point the format had not yet been confirmed.

Bill Spence is organising the annual Daffodil Tea on Sunday 5th April and seeks 5 members to assist him on the day.

President Noel advised that at the recent Council meeting it was decided to propose Charlie Downie for Honorary Membership. Noel spoke to Charlie at the meeting and Charlie was delighted to accept and then thanks members in his inimitable style.

A busy meeting concluded with a very enjoyable talk from straight talking former DCC Graham Bennet OBE on his experiences acting as Depute Lieutenant to Margaret Dean highlighting the many characters he met and gave a large amount of his time to on a continuing basis. Ken Young gave a textbook vote of thanks.

Next week there is no meeting due to the Charter so the week after that is another evening meeting with a Speaker John Brown. I must not have been listening as I am not sure what his subject is. The host is David Steele, VoT by John Anderson, Alex Mill & Charlie Downie.

The busy conference in the Rosemalen (teacher’s junket) caused a long delay in serving our meal and curtailed the time available for David Robertson, Carnegie member and District Social Media convenor to give his presentation on Facebook etc. David started with a short but interesting video with significant facts re social media use. It concluded with the strapline that it is not an issue whether to use it or not (that battle is lost) but how well you use it. The GinFest organisers are meeting him next week to seek his help. Dave Somerville gave a vote of thanks.

The new Forth Bridges Club is being chartered on 16th January with about 20 members.
David Chalmers gave an entertaining talk on the arsonist and his cack handed scheme to defraud 4 insurance companies by burning down his home mortgaged to DBS. David was a witness at the trial and was very impressed by the judicial system and its practitioners…. Jack Wardell gave the vote of thanks.
Next week’s meeting is in the evening and has been much publicised. The Speaker if Emmy winning TV film maker Keith Partridge who is coming at 4.30pm to set up what sounds like a mini IMAX cinema for our entertainment. · President Noel publicised the speaker at our evening meeting on 16th January. The following is from his profile on the BBC website: Keith Partridge Adventure Cameraman (British). Emmy award winning adventure cameraman, Keith has over 20 years experience of extreme climbing and caving camerawork, with credits on Touching the Void, Human Planet and Lost Land of the Jaguar. Keith has climbed Tepuis before, and is one of the very few people with the skills to both complete the climb, and film it at the same time. Keith is sure to have an exceptional presentation of his work and is bringing his own large screen and sound equipment to highlight it. We will be in the Rosemalen Suite and partners and guests are very much invited too. Nearer the time I will ask for confirmation of numbers.

President Noel attended an Area Meeting where it was confirmed that the new Forth Bridges club will be Chartered next month with at least 20 members (mostly new to Rotary) and centred on Rosyth. Their style is to be much more informal and at lower cost
Wonderful members tale from Keith (or as most of you call him Tog). Members were delighted to experience a slide show presentation like the old days. They were also delighted to view slides from the 80s & 90s of members who were then dark and full of hair and half the men they are now. Keith moved on to his skiing exploits including the Haute Route from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn and in Kashmir. Typically these talks teach us things about our fellow members that we did not know before and increase our respect for them if that is possible. Anne McFarlane shared that experience of finding out things she had not known before about her husband but I was unclear on the second aspect! Graham Steedman gave an excellent and fulsome vote of thanks that was pro-rata to the length of Keith’s talk.

Noel is looking for a decision shortly on charities to support this Christmas. Noel is attracted by a proposal from Linda Mill. That is help with Hampers for deserving families of Linda’s Children & Families Disability Team at Social Work. More info to follow
Our planned speaker had to pull out at the last minute resulting in Convenor Brian pulling a rabbit from the hat in the form of ex-cop John Johnston promoting the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance Service. Since the late 60’s government has paid for helicopters in the west and north but not the east. This gap was identified and is now plugged by the Charity. John gave an excellent pitch leading to many questions from members. Ex-firefighter Dave gave a unique vote of thanks spilling tales from tour when experienced firefighters led astray a young doctor straight from med school at a conference at which air ambulance crews were in attendance.

Former President Tom Sunter gave a comprehensive, engaging, stylish and vividly illustrated by photo’s presentation on Wild Ice in the Antarctic captaining HMS Endurance. I was amazed to hear that a Captain with Tom’s experience could overlook the Von Tuile effect on the current causing his ship to recreate that famous scene in Titanic and ram an iceberg. Alan Mitchell gave a well-researched vote of thanks.

John Haxton’s member’s tale was on work, rest and play. In tribute to Brian in the chair John only managed to get through play (rugby) and get started on work before running out of time before offering to come back and finish off to Brian Steer’s delight. School friend since P1 day 1 Blair gave an excellent vote of thanks chastising John for failing to entertain us with his singing, Zulu dancing and his horn.
Next week’s meeting is in the evening and the speaker is our own Tom Sunter on Wild Ice (Antarctic Moments). The VOT is by Alan Mitchell, host is John Haxton and receptionists are Andrew Bathgate & Tom!

Keith reported that Ronnie Pook and his partner Helen Doran won the Couples Golf event on the wee course last Sunday. The trophy (sized at the opposite end of the scale from the cup with the big ears in Glasgow) will be presented to Sean to take home to Helen at an upcoming meeting. Keith is collecting collecting boxes to distribute for the Remembrance Poppies.

Brian B spoke at length on Youth & Schools….he needs 6 members to assist with the Young Musician Comp on 8th November at Dunfermline HS. Members approved expenditure of £595 on 2 suitable candidates selected by the Club not school for RYLA next July.
Jim Leishman gave a tour de force history of his career in football (playing and management) and latterly as a politician and Lord Provost of the Kingdom of Fife. Jim from Lochgelly has risen to dizzy heights and spoke at length on his international travel as our Provost. I trust Jim’s chauffeur got him home safely. I knew Ian Morris’ vote of thanks would have everything and the kitchen sink in it when Ian got in touch prior to the meeting doing some fact checking. Ian did not disappoint and read the many pages of his notes beautifully!
Next week’s meeting is a lunchtime Member’s Tale from John Haxton. John gave a tremendous speech at the end of the celebration of the District Conference which ought to ensure an excellent attendance next week. The host is Gerry Gillespie, VoT Blair Morgan (keep it shorter than Ian) and receptionists are Jim Barnet & Brian Steer.

Jean Wilson from Leven RC gave a demonstration on how to give a presentation for Lymphoma Action for which she is an Ambassador. Their colour is purple so she had a quiz on the subject the prizes for which she dispensed small bars of Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate. She did go on bit thereafter for which Noel desperately signalled to her with is watch but we can forgive her that. David Fraser gave the vote of thanks.
Next week is an evening meeting and the speaker is Jim Leishman MBE etc. Not sure of the subject but it is bound to be about Jim. The host is David Gemmell for which I know Noel has organised a sub, VoT is Alan Mitchell and receptionists are Tom Arnott and David Steele.

David Lyth gave a wonderful member’s tale of his experiences in Iran arriving just as the Islamic Revolution was kicking off (Helen being pregnant!!) and ending a year or so later with all foreigners having to leave. David leaves us all feeling like we have not really lived. Russell gave a textbook vote of thanks.
Next week’s meeting is a biggie. A full turnout of members and partners is requested (members in jacket and tie) for our joint meeting with Inner Wheel and celebration with entertainment of the District Conference 25 years ago. Blair prefaced his promotion of the District Conference celebration on 19th September at 6.45 for 7pm by suggesting that Ken, from behind, had reminded Blair of JC. That is Jeremy Corbyn. There was a sharp intake of breath…. Blair promises a spectacular evening of piping, drumming, visual treats, confectionary treats (tablet) and witty stories of the event fantastically well organised by, well Blair! This is one of our major meetings we should be moving heaven and earth to attend with partners.

Ian Walker gave a tremendous presentation (advert) for Johnson & Johnson and his top role with them having started off at the bottom with Ethicon in Edinburgh. Ian is now tasked with holding them to their credo. Ian is a top Scottish businessman and was a real coup as a speaker. Andrew Watson gave an eloquent vote of thanks.

This is the default a/c into which all payments should be made. If the payment is charitable in nature it can be transferred by David to the correct a/c. If however it is paid into the Charity A/c effectively in error then it is problematic to remove it to the General A/c. Sean Donaldson, MD of Babcock Energy Marine gave a detailed presentation on his role in the expansion of Babcock throughout the world and most importantly in Rosyth highlighting all of the markets in which they now operate as they seek to take the turnover of the businesses operating out of the dockyard from £200 million to £300 million! Captain Tom Sunter gave an eloquent vote of thanks. I did say to Sean after that I was still mystified as to why he is unable to attend more of our meetings…

Our excellent speaker was Mark Macleod of Fife Cultural Trust, Project Manager in charge of Dunfermline Digital Tours. Members grandchildren will enjoy the software accessed on smartphones which gives a wealth of info on the town to youngsters. David Fraser gave the vote of thanks

* Blair Morgan is organising the Club's celebration on 19th September of the 25th Anniversary of Alistair Brown term as District Governor and his Conference in Glasgow organised by the Club to huge acclaim. Many of the members who played a part in the organisation and at the event will provide witty tales for our amusement. Members, as recommended by Council, approved the Royal Marines Drum Corps, who performed spectacularly 25 years ago, attending our celebration to perform at a cost of £600 from the General Fund. As you would expect their performance demands a high turnout of members, partners and interested guests such as previous members who might have attended in Glasgow. Please not the date in your diary. Inner Wheel are being invited to join us. Attached is a list from the event programme of the members who attended. Blair is co-ordinating the celebration at our meeting on 19th September of the 25th anniversary of the District Conference in Glasgow organised by Blair and his team for out most recent District Governor from our ranks namely Alistair Brown. Eric Keenan’s excellent Member’s Tale focussed on some of the history of the Club as we approach our Centenary including the various venue changes, stramashes over meal price increases and visit to the Club by Mr & Mrs Paul Harris in 1934. Once upon a time a 3 course meal, coffee & biscuits was par for the course!

Ex President Tom Sunter undersold our achievements when quoted in the Press claiming that £27,000 has been raised by the Club for Charity in the last year. President Noel was able to correct that to over £28,000!
Listening President Noel has followed Charlie Downie’s wise words and decreed that the Race Night will not take place this year allowing the wine tasting to come forward to Friday 13th September (my birthday!) and allow us to focus on the usual fund raising events in November/December

We think there are 3 bottles of gin still to be paid for so this is a gentle reminder to not overlook this!
President Tom gave an eloquent, witty and warm summary of his year in the hot seat. His favourite moment was Charlie advising him at a meeting that “We are doing too much!”. Tom calculates that we spent 19 days in total in each others company as members last year which is indeed too much. Tom has left Noel with about £7,000 in the Charity Fund at the start of his year.
Rotarian of the Year was awarded to the Council for their efforts in supporting Tom. Tom asked Graham as Community Convenor to accept the trophy on behalf of the Council, look after it, polish it, plate it and have it engraved.
The Jewel was duly passed over to President Noel who thanked Tom for his huge effort this year. He reminded members that Tom had missed only one meeting despite the more important calls on his time supporting Margaret. Noel seeks the same if not greater effort and support this year and expects by the year end that we will have spent 20 days in each others company.

Next week’s meeting is the GinFest Final Report (not to be mentioned again to the Club until next year). The meal will again be served as a buffet. This will be followed by a presentation (with some interesting facts on the figures) and a draw. The draw will 50 bottles of gin (over ordered stock) and will be drawn at a cost of £30 each. To date 40% of members have already paid to participate in the draw. The aim is for each member to agree to participate at a cost of £30 per member which will sell off our stock and raise an extra £1,500 for the Charity Fund and bring the profit for our first GinFest above £9,000. If you have not paid to date I would be grateful if you would let me know in advance of next week’s meeting whether or not you wish to participate. · The Senior and Junior VP’s gave a presentation on the feedback from members on the consultation exercise on the future of the Club. There was lots of feedback mostly positive. After a break the President led the question and answer session during which there was much hot air!

· David Chalmers received approval for a Nduriri Water Harvesting Project with the Langata Rotary Club of Nairobi, Kenya. Incoming President Noel charged David with sourcing a water project. Guttering, water pipes and a storage tank will be supplied to a secondary school to save water from the new roof during the rainy season and store for the dry season. This will support both the school and the small district. Subject to currency fluctuations the cost to the club will be about £1,500 with hopefully a similar sum from District which David is applying for before the 1st June deadline.

· The President reported on the resignation from membership of George Sinclair. George was dissatisfied with the time allotted at the most recent Council meeting to his IT subject and wished new members to be recruited and signed up online departing from existing procedures which was not supported by the President and Vice-Presidents.

· The next meeting is an evening meeting on 4th April on the WAY AHEAD for the Club. This is a forum which will be led by the Vice-Presidents and follows their extensive consultation with members direct. They have proposals for us to consider. Please attend and engage to agree on the way forward for our Club. The receptionists are David Gemmell and Brian Blanchflower

· Fantastic whisky tasting presentation and quiz by David Walker with 4 malts. The low scoring quiz resulted in a tie between GPs Gerry and John. What was remarkable was that Gerry was only sniffing and not tasting the whisky. The tie breaker was won by......I can’t remember. The whisky was good. Sean gave a vote of thanks.

· Gin Fest fixed costs should be met from ticket sales. Gin, beer and wine sales should generate profit together with sponsorship. Breakeven point of event is about 400 ticket sales.

· I read out a lovely letter of thanks from Christine Fraser re her flowers, members who had visited Ken at home, expressions of sympathy from so many and members who had attended Ken’s funeral. She concluded that Ken had been proud to be a Rotarian and a Past President of the club and valued all the many friendships he made with fellow members.

· The President highlighted that the next few months will be very busy with many events planned in addition to regular meetings which require members to be fully engaged with to make them a success

· David Somerville gave a comprehensive member’s tale about his only unresolved fire investigation with a very high quality PowerPoint presentation (raising the bar massively in that respect for those following – thanks Dave). · Speaker Julie Journeaux wonderfully explained the Curriculum for Excellence and such was her success that members engaged in an unprecedented level of insightful and humorous questioning.
Highlight however was Charlie Downie intimating he would have to leave early in her talk due to a long standing commitment.
Minutes later Charlie sat uneasily shifting in his seat not looking forward to interrupting the speaker.
Head Teacher Julie being familiar with young boys who need to leave class for a comfort break recognised Charlie’s predicament and excused him from class!

For those not there you should be aware that George Sinclair was inducted into the Club.

David Somerville introduced George in the following terms: George was born in Thurso, Caithness did an apprenticeship with the UK Atomic Energy Authority n Dounreay and in his 5th year went to Heriot watt University.
George has lived in Dunfermline for 41 years, 27 in Fairways.

He graduated from Heriot Watt in 1971 and worked as an electronics design Engineer, Senior Engineer and Project leader in various companies in Central Scotland until 1988.

Much of his design work was for the UK armed forces. Two of his most interesting projects were designing an Armoured vehicle mounted radar for the UK army and Surveillance equipment for NATO.
He became a project Manager in 1988 with Ferranti in Edinburgh and eventually had a team of 30 design engineers and Project Leaders reporting to him, designing military avionics and land based equipment.
Ferranti later became BAE Systems and he became a bid manager. He managed over 160 bids ranging from £50K to £150M for customers across all 5 continents, latterly with a team of Bid Managers reporting to him He retired in 2006

Since 2006 he has written and published short stories 2 novels and nonfiction books and has several other books in preparation. He has taken an active part in many sports including mountaineering, pony trekking, running, skiing, snorkelling, squash and weight lifting. He took part in inter-university competitions in Judo and swimming. He still does gym and swim and hill walking regularly.

He contributes to the culture and creativity of Fife by helping to run Fife Writes which holds free gigs and writing workshops in various venues across Fife. 52 events have been held so far. The aim is to promote writers, novelists, poets and musicians and to help budding creatives.

My recommendation - I am happy to recommend George Sinclair as a member of Rotary since I believe he meets the criteria to become an active and successful Rotarian. I understand there have been no objections to his prospective membership following the `7 day letter` sent by our Secretary. I have no hesitation in recommending George Sinclair as a member of the Rotary Club of Dunfermline.

· Bill Runciman gave a potted history of his early police career including the suicide on his first night shift and capturing Edinburgh’s most famous house breaker. The way Bill described it for my part I thought the police dog deserved the highest praise! Discrimination was not really the issue it is now when Bill was on the beat as evidenced by him picking on the “small”” members at the middle table. Bill Livingstone gave a textbook vote of thanks.

· Next week the meeting is the Race Night on Friday and the following week is an Admin/Fellowship meeting. The receptionists are the Premier Services boys.

· Alan Condie gave a fantastic presentation on humour through the years memorably introducing the Two Ronnies Four Candles sketch by confirming that Ronnie Corbett played the Jim Craig role. Alan and Brian Steer have set the bar very high for Member’s Tales! Graham Steedman gave a vote of thanks which set a new record for length but despite that was nearly as good as Alan’s talk.

The New Aircraft Carriers

More than 80 Club members plus guests, including Rotarians from four other local clubs, sat down to supper followed by a most informative and indeed fascinating Presentation by the Senior Warfare Officer of Britain's latest and largest warship, HMS PRINCE OF WALES.
This was followed by a lively and very active Q&A session.

· That means 29 members missed a fantastic tale by Brian Steer. Memorably introduced by Tom as being mentally unstable Brian proceeded to tell us of his rescue of a 15 year old “jumper” from the roof of a store on North Bridge, Edinburgh whilst only 12 weeks into the job. Little did Tom know that Brian would prove how mentally unstable he was to go out on a ledge 100 feet above the street. The faded newspaper cuttings were a great touch. The members tasked with telling tales in the coming months are quaking at the thought of follow that. Russell Matthews gave the vote of thanks.

· The President gave his valedictory remarks to the Club. He commented that the Club is doing well with at least 8 out of 10 members active in the club in one form or another. Membership is stable although we were saddened to lose Bob Taylor this year and wish Mike Williams & Ken Fraser a speedy recovery. He thanked Council for their hard work and support. Fund raising in various forms totalled £13k. He thanked Alan Mutter in particular for his work with other clubs and Youth events and Graham Steedman for his pep talks to the club on attendance and succession and his fundraising efforts. Rotarian of teh Year was undeservedly awarded to yours truly for sitting in my office sending out a few emails here and there. Re highlighted that the Club had acquired and excellent projector and banners and raised funds for polio being a cause close to his heart.

· New President Tom awarded David with his Past President’s jewel and badge and paid a warm and well deserved tribute for leading the Club when others were not prepared to do so and support from Council was difficult early on however David had succeeded in delivering the Burumbiki project despite the sceptics. He plans fun and continuity in his year. He referenced the President and VPs being immigrant Englishman, Irishman and Italian respectively and past Presidents from 40 years ago - Peter Crabb 30 – Charlie Downie 20 Jack Wardell and 10 – Tom Arnott (all present save Jack) still being members of the Club.

" Bill Livingston has had 2 reports on the Club in the Dunfermline Press namely Pittencrieff Primary School winning the District Schools Quiz and "Cash Splash" of £13,000 donated by the Club this year to various charities.
" We await a report at the next meeting of the outcome of the intriguing Technology Challenge. Hopefully members present will take photos and videos which we might share at a future meeting.
" Great speaker. Lt Col Andy Middlemiss KOSB gave a very polished and entertaining talk on the German Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser's Battle) which made major advances in the first part of the year before American soldiers arrived to help turn the tide. It was great to hear 3 members involved too in reading out the letters of servicemen. David Chalmers gave a heartfelt vote of thanks.

· Council approved £500 sponsorship to Sense Scotland, Kindred Scotland, Fife Carers Centre & Young Carers. Members approved too.

· Claire Chambers and Judith Cramb received a cheeky introduction from Brian Blanchflower and proceeded to give a great presentation. Clear, concise and comprehensive. I was press ganged into giving the vote of thanks. Pleasingly Claire prefaced her talk by thanking the club for a very successful Kids Out day which she had enjoyed with children from her school in terms of her day job.

· David Steele reported on the previous days hugely successful Kids Out at its new home at Dalgety Bay Leisure Centre. Fantastic weather, attractions and turn out with 180 school age children nd 120 carers in attendance. Our club had most member present (11) who were the first to arrive and last to leave. David named and thanked all who attended but thanked Alan Mitchell in particular for his work in leading this event for the club. Those who attend often say this event gives the member the best feeling of being a member of Rotary so hats off to all the guys for enlarging and improving the event.
· Andrew Watson seeks raffle/tombola prizes for the garden festival such as bottles of wine/spirits, chocolates etc. Ticket sales are 69 to Graham’s delight but we need more to join in.
· The President is sending a “birthday card” to our daughter club Carnegie for their 15th birthday on 15th June
· Ged Lafferty head of the Samaritans in Dunfermline gave a presentation highlighting their role in listening to those seeking help. The organisation nationally receives a call every 6 seconds. On average nearly 2 people per day commit suicide in Scotland 70% of whom are men. Ged accepted with good humour being chided for them failing to bank our most recent cheque donation blaming a senior ex Bank of Scotland member as their Treasurer! Andrew Watson gave the vote of thanks

· The President advised that Mike Williams has suffered a haemorrhage between brain and skull causing pressure. He was discharged from hospital after a few days and is recovering. Mike is not able to drive and may not be able to attend meetings for some time. He wished Mike a full and speedy recovery on behalf of all members. The President has visited him and already conveyed this.
· 3 speakers then gave excellent pitches on behalf of charities seeking a donation from the Club. John Anderson spoke on behalf of Young Carers in Fife. Supersub (many thanks for standing in for me the previous week) David Fraser spoke on behalf of David Steele in support of Sense Scotland. Finally Bill Spence’s “favourite” niece Lesley Childs spoke in favour of Fife Carers who complement the Young Carers. She is an Information Officer with them and impressed with her knowledge and engaging presentation. The decision on funding will be taken later. The President gave the vote of thanks.

· New boy Blair Morgan gave his Vocational II 34 years after part I. He reckoned Charlie and Bill Spence could switch off as they heard most of it back then. Blair innovated with an interactive presentation I think comparing himself to Jesus, Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott. Blair’s later career as a top sports lawyer name checked Ronaldo, Sven Goran Ericson and £50,000,000 Fernando Torres on which Blair missed out on his 5%. Bill Spence gave a witty vote of thanks

· Senior VP/President-Elect Tom gave a compelling presentation on what he plans for his year – Fellowship, Fun, Fulfilment, Laurels, Innovation, Bargain Basement, recruit old ladies with tattoos, Vice Presidents with roles and responsibilities, teamwork, women, electronic spectrum, Eisenhower, planning does not work but is essential, rhyme, statistics. His presentation had it all. It will be necessary to concentrate at meetings next term in order to take it all in!
· Our 1st Speaker next term will be Tom’s guest Lt-Cdr Ed who spookily decided to dress like Alan Mutter. His talk will be on the Role and Responsibilities of the new carrier. A big turnout is hoped for. Tom will next time give him the second half of his thoughts on what is wrong with the Navy today.
· Tom introduced Brian Steer who will be in charge of Members Tales whereby club members will take it in turns to regale us with witty and interesting stories from their life and careers.

· Noel reported that the Principal at Dunfermline High School texted him to express their thanks and delight at the donations of £500 to the two projects Kincardine Community Association and Play as 1 Scotland who had been unsuccessful in the Young Philanthropy Initiative. The pupils are delighted that their efforts have not been in vain.
· Alan Mutter has placed a new and “improved” sheet on the noticeboard seeking volunteers at weekends for the exhibition of stories and photos in the Kingsgate. The event has come in under budget. The Technology Competition has a budget of £1,000 due to sponsorship by Babcock & Exxon
· I highlighted that the Club Assembly takes place next week when President elect Tom and some Convenors will make a presentation for the upcoming year. Let’s support them by attending! Tom will be attending the District Assembly thereafter
· The President reported that the 5k charity run in memory of her late son organised by Libby Seath is taking place this weekend.
· Honorary Member Angus Hogg gave a wonderful presentation on the Peace Conference based at the Peace Palace, The Hague which he is organising for 24th-27September as Project Co-ordinator. The various Carnegie bodies around the world are coming together for the first time to progress Carnegie’s Peace agenda with particular focus on youth. Our club will hopefully “sponsor” 2 university students to be Ambassadors from Dunfermline to the Conference which is to be attended by the Dutch King. Brian Steer’s grandson and Pip Yeates daughter have been selected to be sponsored all costs being met by Carnegie Trust. Angus noted the coincidence of tulips being on the tables and that he spoke nearly 30 years to the day after he and Noel were inducted into the Club by then President Brian Dean. Graham Steedman gave an excellent vote of thanks.

· Keith reported that Poppy Scotland in Dunfermline & Rosyth had their best year raising over £50,000 for which our members who assisted were thanked.

· Sean supported by Tom Sunter gave a presentation on the legacy plans for the Centenary focussing on things which the Club does in and for the Community and how to do them bigger and better. A further presentation will be made in September
· David Fraser informed us that we have £4,500 on top of existing commitments to donate to charity. Council proposed 5 charities to receive donations of £500. Three have received donations before: Shiresmill Riding for Disabled, Dunfermline Samaritans and Macmillan Cancer. Two further proposals were Kincardine Community Association and Play as 1 Scotland who were the 2nd & 3rd placed charities in the Young Philanthropy Initiative as a result of which they received no donation from that competition. Members approved all 5 charities. David will now circulate details of 5 more charities being considered with a view to further feedback from members so that Council can come back to the Club with a further proposal for the remaining £2,000.

· Garvock hotel are increasing the cost of the meal by £1. Members approved increasing the weekly meal fee collected to £12. Garvock claim we are charged 35 per cent less than standard with no room hire fee.
· David Steel is nearly finished distributing to teh schools photos taken by Bill Runciman at the Quiz.
· The £1200 target from the Swimathon is very nearly reached. Please submit all monies
· The President will follow up Charities his recent email with a discussion at a meeting in a few weeks’ time re the charities which the Club might support
· Eric has organised the Maid of Forth trip for Friday 25th May leaving at 8pm from Hawes pier South Queensferry. As well as a great social evening this is intended to be an opportunity to invite potential new members. The duration is 3 hours and the folk band Pure Malt are playing. The cost includes a Ribeye baguette or veggie burger (please confirm if the latter). Bookings are good but more are sought. The operator needs confirmed numbers and payment by the end of the month. The cost is 22.50pp for BBQ and band or concessions £20.70pp. I trust that this discriminatory pricing against younger members is just a one off!

Brian picked himself off the floor and spoke well of the desirability of liasing with other local clubs and working with outside agencies. David Somerville will check with his contact at Fife Council Social Work.

The former was brought up in Pittencrieff House and the latter gifted it to the town together with the park. The concomitant vote of thanks was eloquently given by Andrew Watson
· There is no meeting for the next 4 Thursdays resuming at lunchtime of Thursday 11th January when John Allan will present his vocational talk. I am sure there will be a great turnout for this

Sharon McCall, Cultural Services Assistant with Fife Council is writing a book on Andrew Carnegies Public/Free libraries in the UK and gave us an enthusiastic tour of these buildings with numerous slides. Fittingly David Walker, a Carnegie Trust Chairman gave the vote of thanks and promised to buy her book.

· The Young Writer and Yong Photographer will be a combined comp around Easter time which might be separated into 3 age groups. The top submissions will hopefully be exhibited at the Carnegie Library. Sponsorship from Babcock and Exxon is being sought by Noel and Pip respectively. For Euroscholar the West Fife club are restricted to one person but have two they wish to advance so the second will go through under our name but be funded by them. The Tech comp will be late June. He also reported on his, Tom and Alan’s thinking in standing for office.
· Graham confirmed that there has been an excellent response from the club for the quiz next Friday and the target of 40 attending from the club appears to be met. More are welcome.
· Andrew has 40 names at present for the excellent value Xmas Lunch on 10th December and is looking for many more.
· Uwe Stoneman from RSPB delivered an excellent presentation on the 50 years of RSPB Lochleven. Bill Runciman gave a long vote of thanks for which a further vote of thanks was considered…
