Business meeting

Mon, Aug 6th 2007 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Bob Petty and John Armstrong from the Rotary Club of Aireborough were guests at the Business Meeting of the Club. It was agreed that the Club would once again combine with the Rotary Club of Richmond to sponsor the Best Kept Village competition in 2008. Eight Ambassadorial Scholars will come to this Rotary District for the coming academic year.  They come from Australia, U.S.A., Japan, and Zimbabwe and 1 will study at York University, 6 at Leeds University and 1 at Huddersfield University. The Reading and Chess groups organised in the local schools have proved to be of great benefit to the Schools involved and will continue in the next academic year. The Herriot Trail Run was discussed and many complimentary e-mails and letters and telephone calls have been received.  Thanks were offered to the Sponsors of the event, Dale Sport of Bedale who provided the prizes in conjunction with Puma; Lord Bolton for the use of his land and the Farmers allowing access through their land. The event produced a surplus of £1,700.  It is hoped that ‘Foot and Mouth’ does not spread and cause further problems to the still hard hit farming community and that the Wensleydale Show will still take place.  A ‘Shelter Box’ will be on display and the help it provides to disaster areas can be demonstrated. August is Membership and Development Month in Rotary and the Club’s presence at the Show could be a means of showing how much Rotary gives to the community here and abroad by giving their time and expertise. A Rotary Club is open to men and women who are business, professional or community leaders who want to use their experience for the benefit of others. Rotary Clubs across the country have responded to the Flood Disaster by currently raising £80,000. The club responding to the Filey Flood Appeal proposed sending £500. To the International Appeal it proposed £500 to purchase a ‘Shelter Box’.
