Rotarian Derek Coulthard from Settle gave a very well illustrated talk describing his experience in Rotary's PolioPlus work in India recently when he was part of a team of 34 supporting the mass immunisation campaign to help the final stages of global polio eradication. Rotary with the World Health Organisation and UNIICEF has enabled two billion children under 5 years to receive the vaccine. 5 million people who might otherwise be paralysed are walking today with 500,000 new cases of polio being prevented. Working in a booth in the main street in Lucknow he was part of a team giving the vaccine to under 5s. Parents are so grateful for Rotary's support in this venture and bring the children along for their "3 drops" for sadly the victims of the disease are so easily found in the adult population.
Members were reminded of the Mountain Bike Race and Time Trial to be held on Sunday 8th. November at Lightwater Valley run in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance
