SWEENEY TODD COMES TO CALL

Members of the Rotary Club of Wakefield Chantry were entertained at one of their recent meetings by two of the principal stars of CAPA (the Cathedral Academy of Performing Arts).
The Rotary Club has amongst its many charitable works, endowed an annual bursary, to help the students with the costs of attending the Academy during the course of their studies.
CAPA is about to put on a 7 night run of the musical thriller “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” from June 30th to July 6th at the CAPA Performance Centre on Thornes Road in Wakefield. Originally a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. The musical is based on a 1973 play by Christopher Bond. Set in 19th century England, the musical details the return of barber Sweeney Todd to London after 15years of exile, in order to take revenge on the corrupt judge who banished him, by conspiring with a local baker, Mrs Lovett, who is in desperate need of fresh meat for her pies!
The original musical opened on Broadway in 1979 and in the West End in 1980. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Olivier Award for the Best New Musical
Entertaining the Rotary Club, were Elliot Lee who stars as Sweeny Todd and Isobel Oliver-Haste who stars as Mrs Lovett, Sweeny’s accomplice! They were accompanied by Pauline Trusselle, Head of Music and Singing at the Academy.
