“The best Rotary Night for years” was how a number of members of the Club described the Xmas Dinner and Ladies Night held on Tuesday December 15th at The Park Restaurant in the Waterton Park Golf Club House. The restaurant, which is open to the public and is hugely popular for Sunday lunches throughout the year, put on an excellent menu for the 71 members and friends who attended the evening.
Highlight of the evening was entertainment by formerly trained opera singer Jake Walsh who President Bob, had arranged as a surprise for the evening. Jake did 3 sets for the guests, including opera numbers such as La Donna e mobile, Ave Maria and, with most of the audience singing along to the popular version of “just one cornetto!!”. Jake also included some musical numbers from Les Mis and some Xmas songs which the audience could also join in on before finishing the evening with Nessun Dorma.
3 of the ladies, Judith Evans, June Richmond and Rita Guard, had between them organised a gift tree in aid of the Rotary Charities as well as special handmade gifts for every lady present. Thanks to their efforts, and although the evening was not formerly for fund raising, several hundred pounds were raised for the Rotary Club’s Charitable Trust fund.
Special guests on the night were Ernest and Elizabeth Hibbert, founders and trustee’s of the Wakefield Charity, The Community Awareness Programme (CAP). The Charity was the one of the main beneficiaries of the Club’s efforts at the Dragon Boat Challenge organised by ourselves and the Huddersfield rotary Club. President Bob presented Ernest and Elizabeth with a cheque for £1500 from the proceeds of the event.
A great night for all who attended – good food, fellowship and most of all great fun!
