Know Your Rights of Way by Robert Halsted 30th August 2023
Robert Halsted a retired Chartered Surveyor and avid mountain biker gave a most interesting and informative presentation about Public Rights of Way. He explained that PRW’s are highways in law and provide “Rites of passage for the King and his subjects.” These rights date back to William the Conqueror. He outlined a series of five types of tracks with differing highway uses and what could travel on them. These are: - Footpaths, Public Bridleways, Restricted byways, Byways open to all traffic and Unclassified County Roads.
He recommended the use of the 2½” to a mile Ordnance Survey maps to identify these routes and the North Yorkshire Council interactive online map is extremely useful to walkers and cyclists. There is also the 25 inches to a mile series of OS maps which provide even more detail including field boundaries.
He went on to detail “Right to Roam” and how he is serious in keeping these rights of access open and mentioned the “Right to demonstrate on the highway.” Then he explained that electric bikes which are restricted to a maximum speed of 15MPH are allowed on some tracks. Doug Johnson
