Working with young people

Overcoming challenges of public speaking or technology tournaments, or a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards course helps young people develop tools for success such as self-confidence, planning & team building.

Youth Speaks

This Public Speaking competition is run in conjunction with the The Rotary Club of Pickering who do the main organisation whilst the Cavaliers provide stewarding and judging on the day (usually in February).  Traditionally the event takes place in Pickering at Lady Lumley’s School.  In the past we have often provided an opportunity for prospective teams from the 6th form college to have a dry run at one of our Club meetings. This helps to mitigate the effects of nerves and helps the whole Club become a part of the event.

At this year’s local heat
The Junior competition was won by the very eloquent speaker of Ryedale School talking on "Social Media",
Runner-up was Malton School speaking to the question "Is tourism beneficial to the environment?"
the Intermediate event was won by Malton School  speaking to "Does tradition hinder our progress?"
The Senior competition was won by Scarborough College speaking on "Mental Health".

Technology Tournament

The Rotary Club of Scarborough (sometimes colloquially referred to as ‘the other Club’) take the lead for this event at the Scarborough Rugby Club (usually in March). Teams of young people from local schools must build a working model from simple materials supplied (one year it was a working crane for example).  Sometimes we hold an abridged reprise of the event at one of our Club meetings where members are set the same challenge.  Cavaliers provide support by way of judging and stewarding.

Rotary Young Leadership Awards

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, (RYLA), is a leadership development programme run by Rotary for young adults.Whether you are a secondary school pupil, university student or young professional, RYLA will help you discover your potential and develop the skills needed to be a leader in your community, career and everyday life.

Each RYLA course is sponsored by a local Rotary club or group, programmes run between three to ten days.  The courses bring people together from different walks of life to help develop skills in problem solving, teamwork and leadership.
