15th February 2024
Four club members, Ievgeniia, Karen, John and Chris, attended a Rotary conference in London on 10th February. There were speakers from within and beyond Rotary at the event held at the United Nations Maritime Organisation offices in London. Rotarians and friends of Rotary from over 50 countries attended to share experiences and ideas. All focussed around one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus – Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention.
What did we think? Here are a few personal views.
Karen
"It was great to hear such a range of international speakers. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Irina Bokova, the immediate past Director-General of UNESCO. It was also interesting to hear from the Lord Mayor of London and honorary Rotarian Michael Mainelli who spoke about the "emergence of a new arena for public discourse in the 17th Century - the coffee house" and how all levels of society could meet for lively & rational debates, engage in civil conversation, develop ideas and demonstrate a great example of freedom of speech."
