Club Assembly report from Youth Service Committee 2015
We will continue with the projects we have successfully been involved with over a number of years:
RYLA(Rotary Young Leaders Award) : we have seen at first hand the benefits to candidates we have supported on this scheme. We have sponsored one candidate each year for many years past, again this year we are sponsoring one student for the course this July/August. We would ideally like to send more students if we could afford to because we think it one of the best things we do as a Club each year.
Kids Out: our support to Ripon and Harrogate Young Carers has been greatly appreciated. The enjoyment on the day at Lightwater Valley and the feedback from the young people has always reinforced our wish to continue to be involved.
Schools Technology Tournament: by organizing teams from our two secondary schools and providing a judge and stewards we have indicated our interest and commitment to the event.
Youth Projectswe will be looking at again with a view to expanding this year include;
Ripon Young Musician of the Year After our involvement in this successful event last year, we will be giving active support again. Sixteen-year-old ‘cellist Ben Messenger, one of the 2014 Ripon Young Musicians of the Year, is to perform in the final of the national Rotary Young Musician competition, having won both the district and regional rounds.
The Club offered a Rotary Prize, of a £25 book token to a pupil from each of the Grammar School and the Outwood Academy as a “Service above Self” award. This will be an ongoing award.
We have during the year helped pupils at Ripon Grammar School with interview techniques and with their Careers Evening. I believe this year we have been successful in fostering closer links with the two Secondary Schools in Ripon, both schools are aware of our continuing willingness to help in any way we can. We do develop close links with the Primary Schools through the Literacy Awards, but there is further work to be done. It is hoped to encourage all the schools to take part on our Youth Chary Concert in December. The involvement of the schools in our litter picking will be explored further.
Youth Charity Concert it is planned to hold a fund raising concert in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 5th December. It will highlight the musical talent of the young people of Ripon, it will be an opportunity for them to perform in public and to help to raise funds for Dementia Forward, President Chris’ chosen charity. The audience will include invited residents of residential care homes in Ripon.
In the Rotary GB&I Youth Service Newsletter they list the following projects that might be of interest to clubs ie, Young Chef, Youth Speaks, Young Musician, Young Photographer, Young Writer, Young Citizen, RTYLA, Interact, Rota Kids.
There is only so much we can take on during the year but we are open to new ideas.
