Members came away from the George at Wath last night knowing a great deal more about the islands that make up Shetland thanks to Geoffrey and Verity.
The point was made that the discovery of North Sea oil and gas in the 1970's has significantly boosted incomes, employment and public sector revenues. The talk though moved away from this area to concentrate on views of the rugged coastline, the rolling hills, the sea birds and indigenous breeds such as the Shetland pony. Geoffrey and Verity included references to people who they knew well from their time living on Shetland and showed houses where they had lived. Lerwick, the capital, has a population of about 7,500 and Geoffrey was a member of the Rotary club there.
