Ukraine fundraiser breaks $100,000 barrier
Rotarians from throughout the North East and Kharkiv in Ukraine celebrate in the Beaton Hall, Methlick
Ythan Valley Fundraising for Ukraine exceeds USD$100,000
On Sunday the 23rd of July, at the Beaton Hall in Methlick a presentation was made by Joanna, Lady Aberdeen the vice Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire to two Ythan Valley Rotarians Mr Gary MacAlister and Mr Erik Avetisov who have been raising funds to assist Ukrainian families still in Ukraine.
The fundraising effort has been based on raising funds for heaters to facilitate cooking and warmth in the Ukraine winter and also providing lap top computers for displaced children to continue with their education.
Over 50 Rotarians from all over the North East attended the event for an afternoon tea and a celebration of the event and we were also joined via a zoom video call from our Rotarian friends of the Kharkiv International Rotary, some of whom are still based in Kharkiv in Ukraine whilst others joined the event from locations throughout Europe
The total fundraising level reached as of July 2023 is:
- Laptops Phase 1 - Rotary International Foundation - $25,000
- Heaters project - $32,500
- Laptops Phase 2 donations - $3,500
- Laptops Phase 2 Coast 2 Coast $22,100
- Laptops Phase 2 Gift aid $2,900 (to date)
- Coast 2 Coast matching - $19,500.
Total comes to: $105,500.
Rotary clubs throughout the country were contacted and support came from the following :
- Forres Rotary
- Aberdeen Deeside Rotary
- Inverurie Rotary
- Westhill Rotary
- Ellon Rotary
- Luton Rotary.
We also received a significant number of individual and anonymous donations.
How many laptops have so far been issued to children in Ukraine?
- 166 laptops were sent out from the phase one exercise. We have the names of every recipient.
- 364 families benefited from receiving a heater/wood burning stove from the Heaters project.
- A further 320 laptops (approximately) will be purchased when we make the final funds transfer in September.
Ythan Valley Rotary were actively involved in a house refurbishment for Ukrainian families, and Erik Avetisov is a Rotarian from Kharkiv in Ukraine who was displayed as a result of the war and now resides in the North East along with his family.
YVR have also been actively involved in Ukrainian awareness events along with Methlick Community Council and Inverurie Rotary.
Aberdeen Deeside Rotary were also involved and were actively supporting Ythan Valley Rotary in our fundraising efforts.

Saturday 24th September 2022, 10:00 to 12:00 - Come and collect shoeboxes to fill and spread a little happiness. Raffle tickets are available to support Charlie House.

Rotarians Carol Wallace and Jacqueline Hill today received a cheque for £300 for the clothing bank from the members of the Methlick Cycle Challenge committee. Many thanks to all for this substantial donation towards the running of the clothing bank.

On the 14th August our President Jacquiline Hill and the President of Kharkiv International Rotary Erik Avetisov signed a declaration twinning both of our clubs. Erik and other families from Ukraine have recently settled in the Ythan Valley area.

The bicycles will be distributed by YVR members to needy recipients through-out the North east with a Geographic spread from MacDuff to St Cyrus. This has been a co-ordinated effort between YVR, Ellon Cycles and Cycling UK.

Cyclists participating in BP’s Coast 2 Coast adventure will be helping provide 12,000 laptops for Ukrainian children. The challenge involves cycling more than 250 miles across Scotland from Gairloch to Aberdeen from May 25 to 28.

Sunday the 12th June saw the Presidential handover take place at the Ythanbank Village hall. After a great year Hilary Gordon handed over the Presidential Role to our 2022-23 President Jacqueline Hill.

At the Ythan Valley Rotary meeting of the 9th October the members met with Keith from the New Arc Charity. The charity rescues , rehabilitates and releases wildlife. After his tallk Keith was presented with Blankets and £423 raised by members.
