Ythan Valley Rotary and Methlick Primary School

For all P7s the transition into secondary will be different this year and their time together has been cut short by the closing down of schools.

The Ythan Valley Rotary has now helped Methlick school to buy year books, which – at least - can give the pupils in P7’s a memento of their primary journey, now that their normal transition and traditions in progressing from primary to secondary school has been disrupted as a result of COVID 19.

As one of the P7’s pupils from the Methlick Primay School has said: “These yearbooks will mean lots to everyone! For all the P7’s this is a hard time and a rubbish way to end our P7, this book will be a good keep safe and definitely cheer everyone up!”

The Head Teacher, Mrs Colette Fraser and p6/7 teacher Miss Deans - had come up with the idea for the yearbooks and had hoped the p7’s could have done fundraising for the books themselves, but given the circumstances it was not

possible.

Mrs. Fraser has said: “I do feel that the year book is going to be a vital link for these pupils as they have had their time together cut short and have not had the normal passage to high school they should have had. Transition is an important step and Miss Deans and I are very keen to create and maintain memories and bonds they will carry with them to their next stage of education. Miss Deans has worked very hard with the P7’s to create this book and it will be a wonderful memory of Methlick for our pupils”.

The Ythan Valley Rotary donated £200 towards the year books and is happy to being able to help the pupils of the Methlick school during this crisis.

No doubt the crisis is very hard to all the school children, who are just now missing their friends and daily life at school. And for the pupils, who will be leaving the school, this time is perhaps even harder and more emotional, as they will be missing out on the traditions and normal introductions into their next step.

A sunny and successful fundraising day in Ythanbank was enjoyed by Rotarians and visitors prior to our scheduled meeting in the Ythanbank Community Hall. Thanks to all for the donations and purchases.

A view and a flavour of the Philippines was presented by our member Maria Lim-Pittendreich. The presentation about the Philippines was followed by a meal of typical snacks and flavours of the Philippines.

Our Clothing Bank is Two Years Old

On the 14th August our President Jacquiline Hill and the President of Kharkiv International Rotary Erik Avetisov signed a declaration twinning both of our clubs. Erik and other families from Ukraine have recently settled in the Ythan Valley area.

On the 22nd February 2020 a sleepover was held in Neil Ross Square, Ellon to raise funds for the ShelterBox Charity. See the article on the website indicating ShelterBox success !

The bicycles will be distributed by YVR members to needy recipients through-out the North east with a Geographic spread from MacDuff to St Cyrus. This has been a co-ordinated effort between YVR, Ellon Cycles and Cycling UK.

Ythanbank Ladies respond to COVID 19

Cyclists participating in BP’s Coast 2 Coast adventure will be helping provide 12,000 laptops for Ukrainian children. The challenge involves cycling more than 250 miles across Scotland from Gairloch to Aberdeen from May 25 to 28.

Sunday the 12th June saw the Presidential handover take place at the Ythanbank Village hall. After a great year Hilary Gordon handed over the Presidential Role to our 2022-23 President Jacqueline Hill.

Ythan Valley Rotary present past President Eleanor Macalister with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in recognition of her continuous commitment to the community and Rotary, the award was made by fellow Rotarian Hilary Gordon

At the Ythan Valley Rotary meeting of the 9th October the members met with Keith from the New Arc Charity. The charity rescues , rehabilitates and releases wildlife. After his tallk Keith was presented with Blankets and £423 raised by members.

The Ythan Valley Rotary continues to grow and as attracted three new members in January 2020

Ythan Valley Easter Bunny fundrraiser

Aberdeens Archie Foundation receive 50 beautifully crafted dolls. A huge thank you to the dedicated knitting team of Doreen, Lil, Liz, Jacqueline and Margaret from the Cruden Craft Group for taking the time to make the dolls and then distribute them.

Saturday 24th September 2022, 10:00 to 12:00 - Come and collect shoeboxes to fill and spread a little happiness. Raffle tickets are available to support Charlie House.

Rotarians Carol Wallace and Jacqueline Hill today received a cheque for £300 for the clothing bank from the members of the Methlick Cycle Challenge committee. Many thanks to all for this substantial donation towards the running of the clothing bank.
