ROTARY STRIVES TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE TO BECOME PEOPLE OF INTEGRITY

Rotary Youth Sail

Give me a child before he is seven and I'll give you the man.

This is a Jesuit maxim. Its meaning is clear - that children with good role models grow up as people of integrity.

We strive to help our young people to grow up as people of integrity.

We have a number of youth programmes to celebrate and support our young people.

Liz Higgins has the special responsibility to reach out to young people. She says: 'We seek to help Young People in our locality to become good Citizens, promote their creativity, foster an interest in Rotary and specially address the needs of our more marginalised youngsters. We will take part in the Kids Out day, engage with the local Holly Bank Centre for the severely physically disabled young people and  support Mirfield Matrix, helping youngsters at risk of Social Exclusion. We will enter young people for various national activities and promote good citizenship through the young Citizen award scheme, support two candidates to attend leadership training courses, and a candidate for Rotary Youth Sail.'

Maureen Leaske is our lead on the Rotary Young Chef Competition.

The local heat for The Young Chef Competition took place at Thornhill Community Academy on the 24th January. Six candidates took part and enjoyed the experience. They had to plan and produce a 3-course meal for 2 people for no more than £15. The standard was very high and Orlando Gubbini the judge said "in particular, the desserts were so good any of them could work at my restaurant".

Unfortunately there can only be one candidate to go forward to the district round; there were only 4 points out of 80 separating the 1st three, and Amena Shaikh (13 years old) came out best. She goes to Betty’s Cookery School in Harrogate on 5th February for the district round and we wish her all the best.

Rotary Youth Sail

The Rotary Club of Mirfield is looking for a young person, aged between 14 and 17 at the time of the voyage, for us to sponsor to go on a unique programme of sail for 6 days on an Ocean Youth Trust sailing vessel. The voyage will be from the 29 August to 3 September 2022 from North Shields. Priority will be given to those who live in WF14 area.

The sail training requires participants to confront many challenges and is a positive life changing experience. Young people who would gain most from this experience are often those who can least afford it. To apply contact Sara Duffett using the form below.
