Katie first visited the Luwero community project in 2014 as part of a group of 13 pupils and one teacher from Duncanrig Secondary School. The group stayed with Gabriel and his family who run the project. During their visit the group painted the newly constructed three story secondary school and built a fence along one side of the football pitch to prevent the balls getting lost in the jungle behind. The group also assisted with harvesting coffee beans from the area. The group organised sports days and activities for the nursery, primary and secondary school children as well as assisting in the classrooms. The group spent lots of time in the evenings having fun the children in the orphanage.
Katie later returned to the project in 2018 with her mum Sandra. Again they stayed with Gabriel and his family who are generous hosts. Katie and Sandra gained a more personal insight into the daily lives at the project by helping with cooking and washing clothes for the children. They helped in the classroom and created colourful hand drawn pictures to help assist with teaching the pupils and decorating the classrooms. Sandra being a nurse was asked to give a health talk to the community, about 50 people attended and enjoyed the discussions. Again, lots of time was spent with the children of the orphanage, playing games and singing.
