THE efforts of Cowdenbeath Rotary Club members to play an important role in their community were warmly praised by Rotary District 1010 Governor, Graham Leith, on Thursday night.

The District covers the area from north of the River Forth to the Highlands and Islands, so Graham sees a lot of different club set-ups on his visits over what is a big geographical area.

He was aware that the Cowdenbeath club had recently celebrated their centenary and learning of the recent activities working with primary and secondary schools in the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area impressed him.

“The work with the youngsters involving them in the VE and VJ commemoration events of last year, and the follow up work by president Craig Bennet and John Bald, on the invitation of schools to impart knowledge of the effects of World War 2 on the local community of the day is so very encouraging,” he told the Cowdenbeath members.

“I realise that you are a small club in number terms, but you are very busy group who want to play as active part in your community as possible.

“I am aware of your close relationships with other local clubs, such as Dunfermline and Carnegie; and West Fife which sees a lot of good community work taking place.

“I know that you rightly want to increase your membership, but you have a good structure which allows you achieve a great deal and hopefully this success will continue in the coming months and years.”

The DG said that he had visited over 70 clubs since he took over the role in July, and he saw a great many different ways of successfully helping local communities, and he felt that the Cowdenbeath model was something which suited their needs well.

The District Governor was presented with a Cowdenbeath club pennant by president Craig Bennet in front of the membership.
