COWDENBEATH Rotary Club has received encouraging news that their project to create a proper water supply for a Zimbabwean community is helping people domestically and economically.
The club raised £800 themselves for work on the project in Arcadia, just outside the Zimbabwe capital Harare, and they applied for a grant from Rotary District 1010 to complete the £2,000 needed to develop the community's well and put the pump mechanism in place to allow the villagers to fully benefit from their new fresh water supply.
It meant that not only could the people of Arcadia get quality fresh water for their homes, but also a supply to the fields farmed by them.
And on Thursday night club member Hank John, who came across the need for the fresh water project in Arcadia through meeting a church minister from the Zimbabwean community at an ecumenical event in the East of Fife: said “I was delighted to receive news this week that not only are the residents of Arcadia being able to use the water from the system in their homes, but that also the supply to their fields is helping bear excellent crops. The Arcadia community thanks everyone who has made this possible.
“The 40 metre well is supplying good clean water which is helping this fine community in so many ways.”
The club's International convener, Tom Russell, added: “It really is such a good news story thanks to the backing of District 1010 and our local community who helped us raise the funds to back this project.”
