We were delighted to note that one of our member's names appears in the New Year's Honours List 2009. Rotarian Arek Hersh has been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to Holocaust education. Arek is himself a Holocaust survivor and a thoroughly nice bloke. Congratulations Arek!
On 27th October 2008, we sent a copy of our Club banner by email to the Rotary Club of Salem South (District 2980), India because they sent their's to us. Last year they exchanged banners with over 13,000 Rotary Clubs around the world! Their banner is shown below:
Rotary Club of Leeds Elmete Golf Day supports Research into Choroideremia and The Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Fight for Sight, the UK's leading eye research charity, was one of the beneficiaries of the charity golf day on 19 September 2008, organized at Headingley Golf Club by the Rotary Club of Leeds-Elmete. The other main beneficiary was the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The day was organized by Rotarians Dr Ken Garrett and Dr Pran Bhattacharyya to raise funds for research into Choroideremia, a rare inherited eye condition which causes progressive loss of vision and for which at present there is no cure. Ken wanted to raise not only funds, but also awareness of choroideremia. He is great uncle to Tommy Salisbury, who has the condition, and whose family have already raised over
