Sarah Thomas, Chairperson of The Manor House Trust gave a fascinating presentation about Ilkley Manor House. Starting with a short background history of the building until closure led to a long period of negotiation with Bradford MDC resulting in reopening by Alan Titchmarsh who also opened the sensory garden. The House is run by Trustees with other paid staff and volunteers.
A lot has happened since 2018, renovated cottages, many varied events, over 8,000 visitors and the development of a web site as a key information point. A Solar Gallery and a pop up art gallery have been developed.
A local history hub and a Poets Corner have been created with an emphasis on Wharfedale poets and a buttery has been refurbished for merchandise. Funds have been raised for a variety of causes and a heating system has been installed.
Looking to the future there is a need to build on the area’s rich heritage and to develop a creative space in the heart of Ilkley. The forward plan has three clear aims: to work in partnership, to ensure financial sustainability and care for Ilkley Manor House.
Working with both users and visitors is imperative, to work with the wider community to nuture the Manor House and care for Ilkley Manor House.
