What makes our brain work?

Internal speaker meeting with Rotarian Richard Southam 02/10/26

This morning at Poundbury Rotary Club’s weekly breakfast meeting, we were treated to a fascinating talk from one of our Rotarians, Richard Southam, about how the brain works — and just how much is going on inside our heads!

We explored the brain’s seven lobes, looking at the different roles they play in everything from movement, memory and language to processing what we see, hear and feel.

We also learned about the different areas of the cerebral cortex and how these work together to help us think, understand, communicate, make decisions and interact with the world around us.

It was a fascinating reminder that although we might all take our brains for granted, there is an incredible amount of activity happening every second!
