More Pairs of Hands Needed
There can't be too many people in the Eccleshall, Yarnfield, Gnosall, Tittensor, Woodeaves or Swynnerton area who haven't come across the local Rotary Club in one way or another.
This may be our Santa’s Sleigh visits in December annually which raise record amounts each year, our Hook a Duck stand which appears at various events. Or maybe you have contributed to our collections at Eccleshall Co-op store in aid of Rotary’s campaign to end Polio in the world, or support the victims of disasters such as earthquakes or floods which crop up on what seems a regular basis at home and abroad for which local residents have given very generously.
Rotary members are a happy band of people who get satisfaction in helping others in various ways and in enjoying social events. Croquet, darts, bowling, quizzes are amongst the competitions we take part in. The kinds of projects we support range from giving dictionaries to schoolchildren, making donations to organisation like Riding for The Disabled, Prostate Cancer Research, West Midlands Air Ambulance, Donna Louise Children’s’ Charity sponsoring costs of village fetes, helping local sports clubs to replace equipment.
Overseas we are sponsoring the education of two children in Bangladesh, provided books for a school in Uganda, and are this year funding a project to provide better water facilities in a village in Kenya’. Added to this we have already contributed to ‘Disaster Aid UK’ which provides much needed facilities for use in disasters like the recent hurricane which has hit Haiti in the Caribbean. We’ve also made a contribution to a project called ‘Street Child’ project in Sierra Leone aimed to support children whose lives have been devastated by the Ebola epidemic.
Part of our fundraising is done by helping with events taking place locally, e.g. the Ironman competition on Cannock Chase which we provide stewards for and the clear up of tents and equipment after the VFest at Weston Park where usable tents are recycled for use in disaster areas.
Not everything we do to support the community involves fundraising - we are shortly to launch of a scheme to invite donations of unwanted children’s books which we will channel into a Rotary organisation in our region called ‘Books4Home’ which aims to get books to children who don’t have them.
But it might surprise you to know that all this activity is carried out in this area by just 15 members, and we would love to welcome others who want to put something back to the community, whilst making new friends and enjoying working together. In 2017 our Club together with Stafford, Stafford Knot and Stafford Castle Clubs held a fund raising lunch provided by the Ghurkas. The funds raised were to go towards the reconstruction of a school in the Bhojpur Municipality.
