Supporting Ukraine

Our club has been helping support the victims of the conflict in Ukraine

Street collections

Following the invasion of Ukraine two street collections were organised, one in Ormskirk and one in Aughton. A magnificent £2,200 was raised and forwarded to the DECs Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

The Hub, Crosby

Many members have volunteered at The Hub in Crosby that has been set up to welcome and support Ukrainian refugees. Members have sorted clothing, food and toys, helped to wash kitchen cupboards, ironed donated clothing and generally got involved in whatever they can. As well as this vital hands-on support, our club has donated £1000 to the Hub thanks to a successful application for a Ukraine District Grant. This will be put to good use helping make the centre even more of a support and welcoming place for our Ukrainian friends.

Airport Meet and Greet

Several members of our club have helped out at Liverpool airport working alongside Liverpool Council and the Red Cross to welcome Ukrainians, to offer help, advice and most importantly a friendly face and warm welcome.

Trauma Teddies
The club were also approached by people who wanted to support but unfortunately could not afford to donate much money with that the knitted Trauma teddies project started.

A craft day was held in The Chapel Gallery, Ormskirk by kind permission of the owners and after giving out wool and knitting needles we've received a large number of bears from members of the public.

While welcoming the families the teddies have been given to quite a few children, Rotary member and joint President Liz Tonge commenting: "When they come into the arrivals lounge they are tired from travelling and I have seen faces light up when they are given a brightly coloured teddy!"
