The Annual Car Raffle began in 2000, when local charity ARCHIE was aiming to raise £3million over 3 years to help provide equipment and resources not covered by the NHS in the new build Royal Aberdeen Childrens Hospital.
A number of Rotarians in Aberdeen felt that by working together, Rotary clubs in the area could help with this cause. They decided on a big raffle, with one prize, a car. ARCHIE was to be the beneficiary of the raffle in 2000, 2001 and 2002. During these initial years, a bond was formed with the management team at the Bon Accord Shopping Centre in Aberdeen, who allowed Rotarians to have the prize car in pride of place in the mall alongside Rotarians selling raffle from mid-November until the grand draw on Christmas Eve.
Various charities have benefitted from the Car Raffle over the years, including UCAN, Roxburgh House, CLAN and ARCHIE. The car raffle is now seen as an annual event, where 21 Rotary Clubs from Areas 3&4 in District 1010 can work together and as a result a total of £605,000 has been raised and distributed to charities in our area since 2000.
The raffle is registered through the Gambling Commission whose rules must be complied with.
