Rotary Club Seeks Knight with a Van

Dunfermline Carnegie Rotary Club is urgently seeking a knight on a white charger- or more accurately, one with a van to help transport bikes to England en route to Africa as part of the recent Bikes4Africa appeal.

Thanks to the generosity of Fifers the Rotary Club collected many more bikes than they expected to send to African children who often have to walk up to six miles each way to school.   The bikes now need to get to a collection point in England to be checked over and shipped to West Africa.

Stephen Chorley, President of Dunfermline Carnegie Rotary, said, The appeal obviously moved people and the phone barely stopped ringing with offers of bikes some virtually unused. However, we now have the problem of getting them down south and onto the ship. Local help has been fantastic already with St Columbas High School collecting and storing bikes for us and assistance with transport from Flemings Removals but we still need a wee bit more help.

Please contact us if you can help.

The bike collection, Bikes4Africa, is part of a larger initiative. See below for further details:

Dunfermline Carnegie Rotary Club Bikes4Africa Overwhelming Success Thanks to Generous Fifers

Dunfermline Carnegie Rotary Club has been overwhelmed with donations of bikes for African school children with offers coming thick and fast after Fifers saw news of the appeal.

About 120 bikes will now be sent off to Africa to transform the daily lives of school children there, who often walk up to six miles each way to school.  The project is part of a larger initiative called Jole Rider which has, so far, sent 10,000 bikes to children in West Africa and there is a demand for even more.

Stephen Chorley, President of Dunfermline Carnegie Rotary, said, We are absolutely delighted at the response from people who read about our appeal or heard about it on the radio. It is a marvellous result that we didnt anticipate. So many thanks to all who helped.  It is really heartening that even in these more difficult times people are still so generous to those less well off. They can be assured that the bikes are treasured by the children who receive them.

Flemings Removals have agreed to take bikes to the collection site in England on their regular journeys down south. St Columbas High School and its Interact Club have also been involved in promoting the project and storing the bikes.
