Members of the Mid Suffolk Rotary club attended Icanho on 25th October to present them with ‘Active Gloves’. These are specialist gloves that enable their clients who have weakness in their hands to hold equipment weights and other gym equipment safely, thus enabling them to participate and exercise safely in the gym. Alex Elmon lead physiotherapist provided a demonstration and explained how important it is for Icanhoe clients to exercise but how prohibited they are from using gym equipment if they cannot grip it safely, so these gloves really do make all the difference. Icanho, part of the national charity Shaftesbury, has been providing specialist brain injury rehabilitation in Stowmarket for over 27 years. They support adults and their families following acquired brain injuries, such as stroke, traumatic head injury, brain tumour, and infections.
The Icanho team consists of physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and a specialist social worker. They create tailored rehabilitation programs for clients, which include one-on-one sessions, group work, vocational rehabilitation, and support for returning to driving and leisure activities. They also focus on involving and supporting families.
The service is jointly commissioned by NHS and Social Care but relies on fundraising for resources and specialist equipment.
The photo shows Alex Elmon wearing one of the gloves together with Guy Wiltshear, President of Mid Suffolk Rotary on the right of him, Rotarian Paul Westcott who organised the donation extreme right and Jo Barnard of Shaftesbury Icanhoe on the left.
