President's Blog December 2017

Happy New Year everybody!  Due to Christmas falling on a Monday we only had 3 meetings in December.

We started the month with a visit from Chris Neighbour from the Trowbridge Storehouse Food Bank, who came to tell us a little about the work of the food bank.  It’s quite humbling to hear just how many people need help from them, so we were pleased to be able to give them not only a cash donation but also a donation of food – between us we filled 2 large boxes plus several carrier bags, and following Chris’ visit we now know that tinned steak & kidney pies are popular requests.

On 5^th December we played our second skittle game of the season against Bath Avon Rotary Club at the quirky Tuckers Grave pub near to Norton St Philip – sadly we lost so that’s it for on the skittles front for now!

On 11th December President Andrew and President Elect Andy visited both The Grove Primary School and Newtown Community Primary School to present them with boxes of Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries (The Rotary International Dictionary 4 Life Project) to aid them with literacy – another example of our work in the community. 

December committee’s was a time to look forward to our forthcoming Big Breakfast which unfortunately we have had to move to March from February due to availability of the hall.  Also still to come is our April pub quiz, a twinning visit from the French Rotary Club of Rodez-Espallion, and our President’s Night on 23^rd June when we will be “sailing” on the Barbara McLellan on the Kennet & Avon Canal.

Our final meeting of 2017 was our annual Christmas meal which this year took place at “The Garden” and was attended by 24 members and friends of the club.  A delicious meal was enjoyed by all, along with an interesting assortment of Secret Santa gifts.

We’ve now passed the halfway point in the Rotary year but have plenty of events in our calendar still to come, and we look forward to welcoming lots of eager supporters to our Big Breakfast in March.
