Club Blog June 2016

Our June calendar has heavily featured ‘Presidents’. June is the final month of the Rotary calendar; at the end of the month the current President will hand over office to the President Elect and new Club Officers will take on their roles.

On 4^th June we were invited to Join Melksham Rotary on the Barbara Mclellan barge, to cruise the Kennet & Avon Canal and celebrate Melksham President’s Night. We enjoyed delicious food, great company & good views on a lovely summers evening.

The 6^th June was a designated member organised evening, and staying with the theme of ‘Presidents’, Julia & Laura organised a short quiz which tested our knowledge on the Presidents of the World & Rotary, with a touch of entertainment & science thrown in! We opted to split into two teams as no-one was very confident of their personal knowledge on this subject, but between us we did surprisingly well.

Our own President’s Night took place on Saturday June 11^th. We enjoyed a 1920’s themed Dinner Dance at Trowbridge Town Hall. Live 20’s style music from 2UnPlgd! set the mood for the evening as we enjoyed a glass of wine & admired our themed outfits. The flickering candelabras added great ambience to the room, complementing the period design. Speeches, a three course dinner, silent raffle & dancing followed, plus some tambourine action, it was a lovely evening enjoyed by all. The proceeds of the raffle will be donated to Julia’s House, the Dorset & Wiltshire Children’s Hospices.

With her Presidency drawing to a close, President Julia invited the members to join her & Mark for a BBQ at their home to say thank you to the club for their support over the past year. Déjà vu from the twinning weekend, lovely food, great company, thank you Julia & Mark.

The Rotary District 1200 Skittles Plate final took place on Tuesday 21^st June, at home at the Lamb. Trowbridge Wessex Mead took on Bath Avon… and we won!!!!!!!!! Yes, we are very excited, it is the first time in the history of TWM we have won a Rotary competition, and whilst the Plate is a competition for the best of the losers in the Skittles league, a win is a win & we are triumphantly claiming it! Thank you to all the club members who have played along the way, did the sticking up and generally supported the team over the year, and thank you to Bath Avon for an enjoyable game.

The final meeting of the month, June 27^th was due to be our Business Handover meeting, but it didn’t go quite to plan. With the England football match taking place on the Monday night, the Lamb was unable to accommodate us so the meeting was changed at the last minute to the Tuesday evening. However, our incoming President Liz was struck down with a nasty case of tonsillitis and was thus unable to attend. We therefore held our monthly business meeting, with out-going President Julia giving her valedictory speech in which she spoke of the joys of being a President for the second time, how proud she was of the Club’s achievements, and thanking individuals for their support, but the official hand over to Liz will now take place in July, along with the appointment of the new club officers.
