Club Blog October 2015

October started with an inspiring talk from Rachel Bown, triathlete, footballer, Olympic torch bearer, Special Education PE teacher and brain tumour survivor. Having undergone surgery for a brain tumour in December 2014, fought off major infection January 2015, incredibly Rachel took part in a triathlon in May 2015 and regained enough fitness to come 2nd in a triathlon in June 2015. She took part in the Geneva European Championship 2015 and has written a book @The Butterfly Within: A Triathlete's Race Against a Brain Tumour. An incredible lady.

District 1200 conference took place at the Four Pillars Hotel and Conference Centre on the weekend of 9th - 11th October. It was a full & fun packed weekend packed with interesting plenary sessions, a black tie dinner dance, Caribbean themed party night and a Rotary Showcase. A great opportunity to find out more about Rotary activities while enjoying plenty of laughs with friends, new & old.

On the 12th October TWM hosted an evening of food, music & even a little dancing for the Trowbridge Visually Impaired Club. This is an annual event, much enjoyed by all.

Our run of success in the District skittles tournament came to an end on 19th October when we lost to the Rotary Club of Bath West. With lots of spectators &  good food it was an enjoyable evening and we put up a good fight but lost by just 4 pins.

On 21st October, Caroline stood in for President Julia, and attended the Orders of St John Care Trust Foundation Stone Ceremony at Hilperton Road. The Goodson Lodge Care Centre will provide a safe & secure home for residents to enjoy, close to our town centre.

Trowbridge Carnival Procession took place on Saturday 24th October, assisted by TWM stewards & bucket collectors. There was a good collection of floats but not such a big crowd of supporters this year.

At the end of October, TWM distributed poppy collection boxes to local businesses on behalf of the Royal British Legion, as well as taking part with poppy selling at Sainsbury's. There was a range of new items including reflective poppy keyrings and good public support.
