Club Blog July 2014

Our new Rotary year started a few days late due to the summer holiday season. Outgoing President Alan thanked club members for their support saying he had a memorable year and had met people and done things he would probably never have done if it not for being Club President. In new President Ann Jones' speech, she made reference to how she was feeling now versus 11 years ago as this is the second time Ann has taken office, and how proud she feels to be part of our club. President Ann finished her speech saying, "I hope we can have a really good year, achieve lots, raise lots and have a lot of laughs too along the way!"

The first event of the year was our annual Young Chef competition. On Thursday 3rd July, six students from three local secondary schools competed to be crowned TWM Young Chef. As usual, it was a tightly fought battle, but Jessica Groves from St Augustine's Catholic College cooked her way in to the next round of the Rotary District competition. Always happy to be asked to help in our community, Caroline & David spent an interesting morning at St Augustine's, conducting year 11 mock interviews. The students were asked to complete in advance a job application form for a fictitious supermarket. They were then interviewed for this job, with the interviewers giving immediate feedback to the student on their application form, appearance, manner and interview performance. Did they get the job...hmmm, maybe!

Another community event we are pleased to be associated with is Trowbridge in Bloom. This year Caroline was asked to judge both the Churches and the Community Pride sections. Trowbridge has entered the South West in Bloom competition so we await September to find out if our town is the best in the South West!

Making the most of a hot summer evening, Andrea organised a treasure hunt around the picturesque village of Lacock. Starting at a pub, we wasted no time (it was timed!) in pairs,  working out cryptic clues, spotting unusual features and navigating our way round the village back to the pub for a refreshing drink to discuss those elusive clues.
