A group of Rotarians from the Esk Valley Rotary Club recently visited the Zeeland region of the Netherlands as part of a friendship agreement set-up with the Rotary Club of Schouwen-Duiveland.
As part of the visit, the visitors from Esk Valley were taken on a tour of Zierikzee, the main town of Zeeland and a popular seaside resort, and were taken on a boating trip to see how local mussels are farmed.
The whole area of Zeeland lies below sea level and the Esk Valley members were extremely interested to hear details of the terrible disaster in 1953 when the sea dykes were breached during a great storm. Thousands of Dutch people perished in this catastrophe, and the land for miles around was flooded for many months before the dykes could be rebuilt.
A fun evening in a beach restaurant followed with the Scottish contingent representing their country well and managing to beat their Dutch colleagues in a volleyball competition.
