We moved here in 1992, having lived 300 yards away in Gowanbrae Road for the previous fourteen years. This house had been let prior to us purchasing it.The interior was in need of upgrade and the magnolia dealt with. The gardens were effectively non existent. Grass front and back and forty eight leylandii on the east and south elevations in the front. We had professional assistance in laying out the front garden and the hard landscaping is still as planned. Whilst much of our original planting remains, there have been fatalities and damage. In fact this past winter we have encountered more issues than experienced in any previous winter period. At the same time there have been plants, shrubs and trees that have outgrown their allocated locations or just lost interest in being part of our garden. Apart from an annual visit from the tree surgeon and regular applications of grass feed and weed, we do all the gardening ourselves from which we get a lot of pleasure and tired muscles.We tend to purchase plants from local garden centres albeit a fair proportion is not locally grown.On our travels we can make make impulse purchases - Acers from Westonbirt Arboretum have done very well as have plants from Logie Steading near Forres. Spring colour is important to us. It’s the expectation from late January! The gardens are supposed to be low maintenance and from late Spring onwards they tend to be so, when the beds and foliage have filled out. The gardens have been much enjoyed by our six dogs who have frolicked and sunbathed here but sadly they are no more. But there is always a task or an improvement that can be achieved and that is the joy of gardening isn’t it?
