Kickback Programme: Empowering Bradford's Youth

For the past few months, Rotarians in Bradford have been collaborating with The Bradford (Park Avenue) Sports Foundation to establish the Kickback programme. Rotary Bradford West has taken the lead, donating a substantial amount to get the programme underway, with strong support from other Clubs in the Bradford District.

Objectives of Kickback

  • Support young people (aged 12–16) at risk of exclusion or offending.
  • Provide a safe, structured alternative to anti-social behaviour.
  • Improve mental wellbeing, resilience, and confidence of the participants.
  • Contribute to safer communities.

Community Day Highlights

The Community Day began with the Kickback participants from the initial Kickback group at the Khidmat Centre being escorted to the pitch by President Jim, resplendent in his regalia and accompanied by stirring music. The National Anthem was sung before teams were formed and the games commenced.

It was heartwarming to see the boys and girls enjoying themselves, some wearing Kickback-branded t-shirts, helping each other, and celebrating each other’s successes. At the end of the sessions, Jim presented each participant with a certificate.

Panel Discussion: Racism in Sport

Following the football sessions, a distinguished panel discussion focused on Racism in Sport. This conversation gave us much to think about and underscored the importance Rotary places on Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion. The discussion was led by Ikram Butt, a former professional Rugby League star.

Afternoon Festivities

The event continued into the afternoon with live music, adult football matches, and a community café, bringing together people of all ages to celebrate and connect.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mat of the Sports Foundation for his dedication to the Kickback programme and for orchestrating such a memorable event. Looking ahead, the vision is to expand Kickback to reach even more communities across Bradford and beyond, fostering positive change and opportunities for youth far and wide.
