Why do we do this??
“Every purple crocus tells a story. Its colour reminds us of the purple dye used to mark the fingers of children vaccinated against polio. By planting crocuses locally here in Chichester , we are helping Rotary spread awareness of the fight to eradicate this devastating disease. When the flowers bloom in spring, they will remind everyone that, together, we can help create a world free from polio.”

END POLIO NOW – A WORLD FREE FROM POLIO
World Polio Day – 24 October
Every year on 24 October, Rotarians around the world mark World Polio Day, renewing their commitment to one of Rotary International’s most important humanitarian campaigns: End Polio Now.
Polio is a highly infectious disease that can cause permanent paralysis and, in some cases, death. Although there is no cure, it can be prevented through vaccination.
Since Rotary began its global campaign to eradicate polio in 1985, cases of wild poliovirus have fallen by more than 99%. Working alongside the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and governments worldwide, Rotary has helped protect billions of children through vaccination programmes.
Today, Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries where wild poliovirus is endemic. While this represents remarkable progress, the fight is not yet over. Continued vaccination, fundraising and public awareness are essential to ensure that polio does not return.
World Polio Day is an opportunity for all of us to recognise what can be achieved when people work together towards a common goal. Through Rotary’s fundraising and the generosity of its members and supporters, we can help provide vaccines, support frontline health workers and protect future generations.
For the Club’s in Chichester , supporting End Polio Now means being part of a worldwide movement working to make history. Imagine a world where no child ever has to suffer from polio again. With continued commitment and support, that ambition can become a reality.
This World Polio Day, let us spread the word, support the campaign and help Rotary finish the job.
